A really insightful and witty book about some of the most misunderstood women in Classical mythology. The level of detail in the analysis is insane and the amount of sources Haynes includes, from ancient writings to contemporary receptions, is so wide. And yet the tone is just about conversational enough for the book not to be preachy. I did find it a little dense in places and there were a few slightly unnecessary tangents, but overall I really enjoyed it and any book that describes Jason as “oily” is an automatic slay for me.

I want the text of this book transcribed onto my bones and skull. This was my first Natalie Haynes read and by God, absolutely breathtaking. An essential book that everyone should read at least once. So much of what I thought I knew of Greek mythology was either wrong or warped. Now I’m eagerly falling down a rabbit hole of searching for more Haynes books as well as other mythos retellings.

I've read quite a few of these kinds of books on Greek myths where a selected few heroes/gods/myths are presented, and the author writes about their different depictions in depth. This is the best one I've read so far. This is Haynes' field and you can tell she's brimming with information that she wants to share. The book is so engaging and I highly recommend it
