Great book! I’ve always loved the Greek myths and I have a child who loves them as well. He’s a little too young to read this book but it prompted me to a great discussion with him about the mistreatment of some of the women typically cast as villains (like Medusa).

Very interesting to see female perspectives in settings where they are often overlooked- highlights lots of systemic problems

“This book is an attempt to fill in some of the blank space. When people ask why tell stories that we know best from the Odyssey from Penelope’s perspective, or Circe’s perspective, they presuppose that the story ‘should’ be told from Odysseus’ POV. Which means the answer to that question should always be: because she’s in the damn sorry. Why wouldn’t we want to hear from her?”

This anthology of female characters in Greek Mythology destroys the thumbnail description we get with many of their stories, and adds complexity, research, understanding, and context to each female. I learned so much, and her writing is very witty and thorough. Parts became confusing at times because Haynes includes Art, plays, movies, even a Beyoncé music video to show the allusions and historical evidence to each woman. I have been slightly obsessed with retelling from the woman’s perspective, so this is a great supplement to those.
