I don't know if I'm becoming harder to please or I'm just on a bad run but after my disappointment with Robert Low I thought I'd be fine with a Baldacci. Unfortunately he wasn't as good as I remember him. This has been described as a good beach read and I suppose that's not too unfair a description. I did enjoy his Camel club series but this fell a bit short of the mark for me. The main characters weren't really believable and the story was a bit messy. There are parts where you wonder why they would do this or that and the explanation at the end seemed too long, making you wonder if he did enough in telling the story. I have a few more of his books on my shelf so I will give him another chance but perhaps just the one.
my first kindle read
a classic baldacci : a slow start, a cloud of mysteries, and a can't-hold-your-breath climax

**I don't really do book summaries. I use GoodReads to keep track of books I've read and record my thoughts on them.
This book was not nearly as good as the all of the other books in the series. It was so different that it was like it had been penned by another author. The idea of causing Maxwell to start to go crazy and deal with all of that was so out of left field it was more annoying then interesting. I didn't like it at all and it only got two stars because I like the other books so much.

Nothing special at all, really, just a bunch of pages of filler. Reads real fast, but everything in it is ridiculous.
The dynamic between the two main characters is worthy of Kathy Reichs or the detectives in the TV show The Killing. Love the pairing of psychological storyline with the murder mystery. Plenty of plot twists.
Not my favorite Baldacci novel. I got bogged down in all the code talk and science stuff. But good nonetheless.
Simple Genius has moments of greatness and moments of dumbfuckery. I loved the protagonists' character arcs as well the new character. There are three threads running for about two-thirds of the book and until these were relatively separate, they were enjoyable. After they come together, the whole is not simply that enjoyable and the book becomes less likable. What I loathed were the clumsy call outs to cryptanalysts and mathematicians of ages past. Baldacci could have just put 'normal' names and it would not have been as distracting. But, bonus for a shout to IIT since its my alma mater.
Overall, this book has its ups and downs. But on average (weighted, of course), the book is good.

Read with the World of Sleuths Readalongs Group. Not my favorite in this series so far. Though I did enjoy the investigative parts, the parts about Michelle I could've done without. Not sure why we needed that information as readers and I didn't see anything leading up to this installment that would require that information.
Anyway, I'm still enjoying this pair's partnership and am looking forward to the next one in September.
