Loved the setting and the imaginative storytelling. It was unpredictable and steady paced. I love a witchy cursed tale and this one fit the bill. It is in the YA category so it does read that teen angsty way to me but I did enjoy it.

“If only love were so easily conjured, there wouldn’t be so many broken hearts”
I couldn’t put this book down, it’s dark and twisty and even tho I’ve finished it I can still hear the singing of the sisters in the harbor....

I wanted more. Dont get me wrong, I loved the book. I finished it in one sitting, and I'm super excited for the authors next book. But I feel like, compared to the synopsis, I expected more. More..."wickedness", so to speak. The story was really enjoyable, the relationships heartbreaking, the history intriguing...I just wanted more.

After much deep thought (I mean A LOT, I read this book about 4 months ago), I've decided to rate this book 2.5 stars. The first 100 pages were exactly what I wanted as it was dark, suspenseful and full of witchy legends. (: I found Penny interesting and I was really looking forward to watching the mystery reveal itself; however, all I got was a love story that I wasn't interested in and not enough of what drew me to the book in the first place (WITCHES). I also felt like there were too many predictable YA cliches and while the main idea behind the story was extremely original, the author sticking to basic YA plots caused the book to not reach its full potential. The characters were also very forgettable for me and seemed to have little personality (or if any).

However, I am aware that Wicked Deep is Ernshaw's debut novel and while I didn't enjoy this book much; the atmospheric nature of her writing was beautiful and I am definitely intrigued to read future novels of hers. Additionally, I believe this book may be received better by younger audiences or those just being introduced to YA (though there are sensitive topics mentioned such as drowning and suicide); when you've read as much YA, as I have not much gets by you...

I was really looking forward to this book. Not because it was hyped on bookstagram. Not because the entire world was talking about it. I was drawn to it from the moment I read the synopsis, from the moment I realized that there was a part of me that longed for this book.

And now I know why. I loved this book. I love it. I'll always love it. This story reads like a mixture of a fairytale and Maggie Stiefvater's the Scorpio Races. It doesn't take long to set the atmosphere and to give me this unfamiliar chill rolling down my backbone while I step out of the bed to go to the toilet before falling asleep. After 50 pages I'm already sold and when I wake up and continue reading it's almost impossible to stop.

Even though the world is only small, the atmosphere, the people, the place, it all feels alive, vivid and real. The characters are interesting, conflicted and complicated and somehow the entire book is enchanting and mesmerizing as if it's singing the same song it's trying to describe that lures innocent young boys into the water where their lives are ended.

From start to finish it was sinking it's claws in me and didn't want to let me go. And at the very end, tears were streaming down my face during the most epic and heartbreaking climax I've probably ever came across!

3.5. Lots of it was good. Some was great. A little predictable. I struggled between 3 stars and 4 and ultimately decided to go for the middle.
