i wasn't expecting this to be quite so vibes-based as it was, but once i accepted that i wasn't supposed to REALLY understand a lot of the lore, i enjoyed it a lot

This. Book. Is. Mind-blowing.
And I don't mean simply in how Gibson envisioned, in 1980-something, a futuristic world which reminds me of our social-media-obsessed lives. Or simply how it made me think differently.
This book challenged my vocabulary, tech knowledge, and imagination. Trust me, I tried to start this book over ten years ago and had to shelve it under "didn't-finish-this-crap", but this summer I was determined to read this now-classic scifi and cyber-seminal work.

Cyberspace. Matrix. Sims. Dub.
The cyberpunk world is well-developed, the characters coldly dynamic, and the prose is spot on.

And to think... he wrote it on a typewriter.

Science fiction should be accepted into the literary and educational world as valid art, and Neuromancer is a pretty good exemplar to start.

I have to say, in the first third I kind of figured this one was overhyped. It was imaginative in all the ways I'd heard it would be, but the plot and characters were fairly formulaic-- interesting, but not life-changing. I was prepared to stick out a historical curiosity read with a solid 3.5 rating, but ooh boy this thing. Once the run got going, it got going.

I truly don't love everything about this book. Yet, the amount of reality-warping, mind-fucking, prophet-adjacent flavour and moments make it hard to say I didn't love this book by the end. So, I love this book. I'm Gibson-pilled.

Cyberspace is a consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation. Cyberspace is a state of mind. Cyberspace is the computer room after it's dark. The endless stream of data and patterns we're too small to understand. The contrarily unchecked delusion of human grandeur. The unmaking of ourselves in our own digital image. Dude. I'm fine.
