I enjoyed spending time in Amsterdam with Joe, and, unlike other reviewers, didn't mind the fact that the plot took its time developing. I thought Joe's characterisation was honest and for that reason interesting; his selfishness annoyed me at times but, as a 14 year old boy, I don't blame him. His irrational thinking in adulthood (without making it clear to the reader that these thoughts were indeed irrational) was a good way of showing what it is like to have depression and his illness was treated in an unsentimental way, which I appreciated.
A fairly quick read.
