A fantastically written book with a great concept. However I found the idea that the main character was as gifted at surgery as he was was a little far fetched? I also thought how quickly he developed feelings for Daphne and how nicely things ended felt rushed and unrealistic. A horrifying book but one that will sit with me.

It may be unfair, but having read Hell Followed With Us first, I automatically compare the two. Overall enjoyment, close but a little less, overall quality of writing, close but slightly lower. That said, there are a handful of things I liked even more, and I’d rather elaborate on that. So rarely do we get an autistic protagonist, and I’m grateful for his portrayal as well as the other autistic character. (I won’t go into much detail because I don’t want to do any spoilers in this review). I also enjoyed the small romance aspect.* I enjoyed the depth of the other characters. No one felt overly one-dimensional, which I usually find is a problem in some YA books. The approach to gore in this one was fascinating too.

A note though: check the tags/trigger warnings! The author does put a warning at the front, and I greatly appreciate that. But if you have any specific triggers, definitely check.

I honestly believe that it is one of the best books I have read in a long long time. And not only that, but seeing myself in those pages made me so so happy. I laughed, I cried, I was scared, I felt Silas’ anxiety and anger alongside him when people tried to make him change.
For Silas and Daphne to be happy and the end was my one and only wish once I found out about Daphne, and AJW put some excellent twists and turns in to keep me on the edge right until the epilogue.< / spoiler> Thank you AJW, so much, for sharing this story with readers.

“We are the same species. We're all human. It's not that people cannot understand me; it's simply that most of them don't want to”

For fans of:
  • Queer and autistic representation
  • Historical horror
  • Medical horror

Once again, Andrew Joseph White has delivered a story that is as deeply resonant as it is chilling. This story crawled into my chest and took root there, from the first to final page.

There is always a bittersweet beauty in seeing myself within masterfully portrayed autistic representation, whilst also witnessing the horrors of history and its treatment of the neurodiverse, queer, and ‘other’.

This tale is moving, heavy, unnerving, and beautiful - with Andrew Joseph Whites signature raw body and medical horror throughout. A ferocious and blood-soaked story that is not for the faint of heart, intermingled with a beautiful queer love story. A promise that no matter how dark and dire, you can find people who understand see you for who you are.

If you are interested in picking this one up, highly recommend checking the trigger warnings. As mentioned so eloquently in the author letter at the beginning, “this book is not a necessary procedure, you don’t have to endure it” and there are themes and topics that could be deeply upsetting to some readers.
