The Spirit Bares Its Teeth brought me to tears and I loved every moment of reading it. Much like White's debut novel, I felt unable to put this down until I finished it and it tugged at my heartstrings with every turn of the plot. I LOVE to see autistic trans guy rep, and my own experiences with sanism made me feel emotional in the best way about Silas in this novel. The ending felt so sweet and open to interpretations of what our protagonists do afterwards- and I for one hope they're burning down the speaker society. fuck the speakers.

LISTEN LISTEN take this from a cisgender person I was GLUED TO MY CHAIR, binged this in two days. Cried. Whole spectrum of emotions felt here.

The way this captures the anxiety queer people can feel around their safety/coming out…the way it highlighted how meaningful finding people like or who accept you. How  insecurities and self preservation can make you comply w/ crazy shit…PLUS the themes of how women and LGBTQ ppl were constantly let down by the medical system??? I was sold.

The gore and creepy vibes hit so hard. You feel actual revulsion and fear around what they do to the women and MC in the story.  I also really liked that everyone had a role to play. Even the side characters were dynamic, did things that surprised me.

There is some romance, but it’s not too sudden or unnatural. And it feels like it fits their characters.  They’re honestly just really cute, and a nice touch to whenever some horrific fuckshit goes down. The friendships are tense, but you can tell the girls at the institute care about each other. Some show this in different ways than others.

Lowkey, I  wish the last twist wasn’t actually another malicious character, but I could see it being the case. The seeds were there, but I thought by then the point had already been made. But in general, I had an actual blast.

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

I liked Hell Followed With Us, and I LOVED Compound Fracture, but this Andrew Joseph White title is too gross for me.

The Sprit Bares Its Teeth is excellent. I've reread this book several times,  my copy is annotated to the nines and is actually starting to fall apart from all of the abuse I've put it through. Silas is an excellent protagonist, being everything that the Speaker Society despises: queer, autistic, and strong despite everything he's forced through throughout the book's plot. Watching his growth throughout the story legitimately made me cry, being autistic and suffering from anxiety myself. The main plot was absolutely delicious in how horrifyingly grounded in reality it is, despite the supernatural elements. The other characters are also incredibly written, they really do feel like real people with three dimensional goals and actual feelings about what's happening around them, which only makes the tragedy hit all that much harder. I would die for Daphne, she's perfect, 10/10 no notes.
