Booo, hisss. If I never read another book about infertility where the main character miraculously gets pregnant at the end, it will be too soon. Shame on this author. She also seems weirdly intent on pushing the big dairy agenda… making the kids drink glasses of milk 😫 I thought we were done with that in the 90s.

Not a single character had a single moment of like-ability in this book. I found myself rooting for the murderer to kill them all.

One of the best books I have ever read! It hooks you form the very beginning and each chapter is filled with a twist.

JTE is (was?) one of my favorite authors. This is my least favorite by the author. Initially I was very excited about the DNA aspect but soon became very disappointed with where it went (the “murder gene”). The big reveal as to who the killer is halfway was also a huge letdown! Only to become more lame (“murder gene”)

I am also tired of all these love triangles involving brothers. Gross. Just say no to sloppy seconds.

Lastly, as a PSA there’s perhaps 12 hours in a month a woman is fertile. So one-hit pregnancies are very unlikely. Then too 1/3 pregnancies fail. It would be great if authors stopped knocking people up after one dally…

Overall, very disappointing but Ive read worse. The narrator helped a lot…

Read on hoopla

Note: there are two real-life guys with 30+ kids due to sperm donation. The non fiction book Heritage is superb and then there is the Netflix documentary “Our Father”

SUMMARY: a couple struggling with fertility is visited by the police. A woman has been killed and the murderer is the husband’s son. The couple insists this is impossible; he doesn’t have any children… come to find out he does, 28 in fact! Because he’d sold his sperm to a sperm bank that was shady. This causes strain on the marriage. It doesn’t help that his twin brother, who the wife had previously been with, is coming back to town either.

Half of their story is covering the toll these events take on their marriage but the husbands past is questionable too; specifically his college girlfriend was killed (supposedly it was his roommate) and he was also around when another woman had gone missing. It’s suspicious!

The other family in the story is 16yo Scar who was the one to figure out there were all these “donor babies” related to this guy. She is desperate to “meet her father” but is also struggling to think one of her “half siblings” is a murderer. Her chapters revolve around her trying to merge “families” and find some kind of identity.

I’m torn. The plot was good - lots of twists…. But I literally hate every single character!!!!
