Howards End is what I would call classic-adjacent. Not quite up there with Austen, but I can see why people call it 20th century Jane Austen. However, with its undercooked romance and overall lack of likable characters, it’s not going to be a favorite of mine. It is very British, which I liked, but perhaps the Edwardian era is not for me. I do recommend it for lovers of British literature. Like most British lit, it is a commentary on the social classes, but Forster focuses most of his attention on the socio-economic differences of his characters rather than fleshing them out and making them interesting on an individual level. Despite not loving it, I’m glad I read it, and I definitely intend to watch the miniseries with Hayley Atwell and Matthew MacFayden.
