This was my fault for not realizing this was a young adult book. I had multiple issues with characterization, too much telling instead of showing, a much too predictable twist, and more. The overall plot is a good one even if cliché. Still haven't written off Joe Abercrombie completely and I plan to read The Blade Itself so I hope that series is better.

A good book to read, with twists I couldn’t see coming—but after finishing, thinking back on it there is no one event that stuck out.

This was a quick, easy read. The fantasy was very light but the world building was still interesting and the characters and their interactions were entertaining and endearing. The last chapter was amazingly satisfying.

It was fine, a bit boring.

There are no stakes in the story. How are we going to escape this bad guy? How are we going to escape this bad lady? How will we survive the treacherous sea?  With prayers and luck. Only twice does the main character uses his education (strength) to get out of something. Because of this, I was left reading the story of a young man put into one dangerous situation after another, and I was just waiting for each outcome knowing they're going to get out of it unscathed regardless.

We're told multiple times that the main character has changed and grown, I couldn't see it.

Not a singular female character exists unless it's to serve the main dude in one way, and I really don't know why the romance subplot was included.

Quarantine read! It seemed intriguing so I gave it a shot. O ended up reading it in one sitting. The writing style is very effective but a tad dry in my opinion, which made it hard for my to invest my feelings into the characters and the plot. I did enjoy the plot, especially what the last 30 pages with two fantastic twists I didn't see coming but I could trace back in the little details as soon as they occurred. I think the bittersweet ending was realistic for a story like this, which is such a refreshing and utterly human thing to see. I will be looking into the other two books in this series.
