✨Synopsis✨
Five runaways ride the bus from Bayelsa to a better life in a megacity. They are unlikely allies -- a private, a housewife, an officer, a militant and a young girl. They share a need for escape and a dream for the future. Soon, they will also share a burden none of them expected, but for now, the five sit quietly with their hopes, as the billboards fly past and shout: Welcome to Lagos.
✨My Thoughts✨
After really enjoying Sankofa earlier this year I just knew I had to pick up Onuzo’s backlist and this one definitely didn’t disappoint. I really enjoyed the engaging writing style, I found myself quickly connecting with the characters and the places coming alive in my mind. I would say the first 50 pages or so are a little confusing as a lot of characters are introduced but it then becomes very easy to read. I loved the found family element of this story and thought the backdrop of political turmoil was just the perfect place for unlikely relationships to form and develop. I thought that there was a really good balance of both the crime and darkness going on in the city paired with some really wholesome moments of realisation grown from that. At times it was probably weighted more on the wholesome side and could have delved deeper into the issues discussed but equally it didn’t need to. The end was a little anticlimactic but I think that was driven largely by us not having overwhelming depth throughout. Overall a really enjoyable read
