First half of the book was so so slow. I almost didn’t finish it. Part two was so much better paced and I really enjoyed the twist at the end!

I can’t stand violet I’m so sorry pls forgive me.
Wowee. I didn’t think the second book could be significantly better than the first but I was proven wrong. This was so much better and much more exciting.
It had its issues, sure, and my personal rating would change after every chapter, but overall it was a really enjoyable read (that’s all I base my ratings on).
The book is split into two parts; pretending everything is okay at Basgiath and All Hell Breaks Loose but we’re at an alternate college (a house). Fun!
First half felt a little slow, I was constantly hoping something super exciting would happen to break the slow pace that was happening. Eventually, it did, but like right before I reached the second part of the book.
The second half was bomb. Like wow. It was quick but not too quick, things were more explained, Xaden and Violet actaully talked about their feelings for more than 2 pages, and I got to read about some cool ancient magic!! Yay!!
The good things:
Xaden and Violet’s relationship was too cute. Cute in a familiar way, reading them be comfortable with each other and domestic was something I enjoyed.
The world got infinitely more interesting because we weren’t stuck at Basgiath the entire time. The squad went out to several different places and it was just cool to see how different they all were both in appearance and politics. The only thing I wish is that Yarros would spend just a teeeeeeny bit more time explaining the world (I need imagery!!!)
I was worried for everyone. Once it was revealed that I felt so much dread I had to take a moment to gather my feelings. Wow.
The bad:
Funnily enough, also Xaden and Violet’s relationship. Sometimes it was unbelievably cringe. Like why are y’all sucking tongue in the middle of the hallway IN FRONT OF ALL YOUR SIBLINGS AND COWORKERS. Like sorry I had to pause/skip through some of that because it was too much to handle. Also, there was wayyyyy too much internal commentary in Violet’s head about their passionate kisses, like 2 pages too long. Please please, we ALL know you’re in love and gonna bang later. Have some decency.
I also have mixed feelings regarding their whole “tell me your secrets or I can’t love you” thing they both had going on. TBH I completely understand Xaden’s unwillingness to tell Violet everything about him since that obviously backfired in the first book but, he didn’t have to be so rude about making Violet ask super specific and detailed questions in order for her to get any worthwhile information. Do I think Violet was a little immature for acting like a few secrets were gonna wreck their whole relationship? A little, yes. But I also understand her POV. Xaden is barely telling her anything at all. I would also be very annoyed.
Thankfully, they both suddenly matured and they had a very good discussion about how things would work if they wanted to stay together. +1 for maturity.
What’s the point of naming every side character if 1. They’re never gonna be mentioned again (or mentioned one time later 40 chapters after), and 2. IF THEY’RE JUST GONNA DIE FOR THE PLOT. WHAT THE HECK REBECCA.
Especially since he only shows up in the awful-war moments.
The end!!! It was def not as cliffhanger-y as Fourth Wing, and for that I am thankful. It was a solid ending that leaves enough interest to lead you to the next book. I'm excited to see where it goes.

Bringing back Jack from the dead and making him a venin seemed a little outrageous.Spoiler

Momma Sorrengail dying was really sad, even though she was barely present in the books. Also, Xaden turning into a venin is sooooo interesting. I really thought Violet would be the one to do that but I guess I was wrong.Read for the 2024 Fantasy Bingo
lost a star because she draws the story out soooooooo much. also i would be pissed at the ending, but i know they’re gonna cure him because he’s a main character so like let’s be for real. xaden bby i love you down trust you’ll be fine cause you know where homes at❤️. as for violet, plsssssss learn how to communicate!!! it was painful at times. also she didn’t kill off sawyer just for shits and gigs like she did with liam, so rebecca you redeemed yourself from your biggest mistake.
