Life seems to be going good for Dominic Russo and Levi Abrams. Dominic’s sister is going to have a baby, his longtime friend and neighbor is getting married, he’s got his PI license, and they finally get a much-needed vacation.

But with Levi’s lingering nightmares, the Seven of Spades, and Rohan Chaudhary, FBI profiler, now entering into the case, things are taking a downward spiral. During a meeting, the profiler takes Levi and Martine through a step-by-step breakdown of the Seven of Spades, and Levi sees himself.

Dominic has caught a missing persons case with McBride Investigations. While investigating, he finds himself falling into the black hole of his gambling addiction, but he has convinced himself that he can deal with his addiction. But, after he gets the innocent party, Jessica Miller, away from the abuse and corruption of the Collective, Los Avispones and the Parks known crime gangs, his addiction drags him down to the point of lying to and berating Levi. As Dominic is fading from their relationship, Levi also finds himself investigating Stanton, his ex, something he hates doing as the emotions are still raw.

No matter what Levi and Dominic do, good or bad, it’s a double edge sword. Their lives are turned upside down and their relationship is now in jeopardy. Levi’s connection with Seven becomes more serious and almost consoling. With Seven, the orchestrator of an all-out gang war between the Collective, Los Avispones, and the Parks, the death rate rises. Dominic and Levi, still at odds with one another, team up with a lot of emotions and jump into the fray that leads to some shocking results.

With this third installment of the Seven of Spades series, Cordelia Kingsbridge expertly creates another power-packed plot. This storyline has so much going on, with family, friends, emotions, addictions, gang wars and murders; it’s fast paced and loaded with explosive action. Seven has gotten even more gruesome, and his MO for murders starts to change and throws more confusion into the mix. I have to say that when I got to chapter twenty, I had to stop and take a breather and prepare myself for not only heartache but a hair-raising ending.

Cash Plays has me seeing Levi becoming very vulnerable, not only with the Seven of Spades case but in his relationship with Dominic. Dominic I liked from the start of this series, but I’m so disappointed in him. He just didn’t take the time to use his head and think about all the consequences that his actions and addiction could cause. He forgot about his family and friends, and hurt and neglected Levi. Even though there are only some slight instances, I also felt he also was neglecting Rebel and put her in a dangerous situation.

Kingsbridge’s Seven Of Spades series is even more mind boggling with all its twists and turns, with every new installment. The mystery of who the Seven of Spades is enthralling, and there’s not even a hint of who it could be. I think One-Eyed-Royals is going to be another thrilling installment to the series, but it’s going to get harder to read with the emotional upset between Dominic and Levi. And what other devious plans does Seven have in his diabolical mind?

Don’t push your luck.

Cash Plays is an intense and incredible addition to the Seven of Spades series. The stakes are higher than ever, with a fast-paced and complex plot that deals with murder, romance, betrayal, and intrigue. The characters are very well developed and, together with the main mystery, deliver a story that is entertaining and impossible to put down.

Cordelia Kingsbridge’s writing just gets better and better. This is such an amazing novel. It hooks you in right from the first chapter and just keeps upping up the tension. The story is a bit darker than the previous installments, but it works very well with the direction the series is going. Another one for my favorites’ shelf!

My favorite series is back! Honestly, I keep being surprised by how amazing all of this is. When I think something can’t get better, Kingsbridge goes ahead and proves me wrong. The plot progression and overall series arc is so detailed and well-written that I know there’s more awesomeness to come.

Levi and Dominic continue to be great narrative voices. Their development, even with setbacks and struggles, is such a strong point in the writing. They keep growing and changing, something that is woven so seamlessly throughout the narrative that makes them feel so much like real people. It’s so good.

The main focus is back to the Seven of Spades deal. That is very well balanced with a handful of subplots, all which somehow come together to paint a picture that is grim and absolutely fascinating. Kingsbridge knows how to grasp your attention and keep it.

Another highlight is the romance and everything that comes with it. It’s written so realistically, with its ups and downs. I love how everyone tries to communicate with each other and the importance Kingsbridge gives to it. Even more so as it works to further the plot and develop the characters.

In the end, Cash Plays is just as phenomenal as I thought it would be. Amazing characters, great writing, a sprinkle of romance and steamy scenes, and an intriguing and complex plot that ends with a bang. Definitely recommend it to all Mystery fans and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Up Next: One-Eyed Royals.

This is definitely an issue with me, not the writing. I'm having a hard time continuing with this one. I know that a longer romantic series is going to have an extended black moment, but I never like it, and I don't like looking forward to whatever precipitates the breakup. Am considering skipping to the end.

I read the final two chapters and then started the next book. I'm content not knowing exactly what happened in this book's mystery. If necessary, after finishing the last book, I'll come back to this one.

That ending...THAT ENDING...ThAtEnDiNg!!!!! Someone for the love of all that is good and holy and right in the world make a damn time machine so I can skip ahead to September and One Eyed Royals because I can't even with that ENDING!!!

YOU HURT HIM, I HURT YOU...DON'T PUSH YOUR LUCK

Anywhooooo, I loved this book, despite the almost overwhelming sense of dread that the second half of the book gave me. I knew it was all going to go to hell in a handbasket but I didn't envisage Dominic screwing up that badly. Levi is also in the most horrible position and despite him coming across as a slightly unhinged powderkeg of violence I really just wanted to hug the crap out of him. September can't come soon enough.

OMG
WHAT A RIDEEEEEEE

It's been so long since I was so deeply invested in the story and the characters' emotional and mental well-being.

The first half of the book was very sweet. It was a bit out of character for Levi and Dom, or maybe they were finally confident enough in their relationship that they could open up and let go. They started to relax around each other and trust each other...At one point I even thought that it's too good to be true. They're saying and doing all the right things (and it turned out I wasn't far from the truth, but I'm not gonna elaborate on that further)... and then Dom
Spoiler had to go and fuck it up. He should have asked Levi's help, his support. He had to know that Levi wouldn't judge him, he wouldn't even have asked questions until Dom was ready to talk. It was more like he was too embarrassed and disappointed in himself. He should've known that Levi would be more hurt by Dom not telling him, than the actual secret he kept from him.

The thing that blew my mind, is that somehow the relationship part of the narrative is following my own thought process. That doesn't mean it's predictable, it just means that I spent way too many hours stewing on a fictional couple's relationship and poring over all the details. That's how obsessed I am. ;D Also, Levi got to me. Somehow I could imagine myself in his place. I feel protective of him. I feel like he wants to clung to Dom, but not in a jealous boyfriend way, more like... he needs that lifeline. Dom grounds him.
I was not impressed with Dominic's behavior. but I do feel it's a great representation of someone with compulsive gambling problems. And I loved the conflict it created between them. (I didn't know I knew such colorful curse words. lol)

This installment was full of surprises. I loved the suspense. I love that SOS is getting crazier and I love their "relationship" with Levi. I love the increasing intensity.
I know that eventually this series has to  turn more personal when it comes to the serial killer. It has to come to a head at some point. And they're getting close to that line.

This book is wrenching--like the "Empire Strikes Back" of this 5 book series. Absolutely full of delicious pain.

3.5 Stars

Started out really strong, but the middle definitely drug for me. I didn’t really enjoy the gang/gambling storyline at all and was just looking for more Seven of Spades the whole time.

Also, Dominic was a huge disappointment for me here.

PS. Poor Stanton. I actually wish he could have a spin-off HEA.
