Ughhhh, the angst was definitely present in this book, though it wasn't as unbearable as I feared it would be. Like only the best can, Kingsbridge wrote the angst in a way that it truly felt necessary to the story, and I was able to handle it. I did have to take a few breaks, but it was worth it.
In this installment, the Seven of Spades is back. And there's also a gang war brewing. And Dominic and Levi both start spiralling for different reasons. Instead of finding solace in each other, Dominic cuts Levi out to hide his shame so they are both alone in their pain. I wanted to kick Dominic's butt so many times. Addiction sucks and it's not his fault necessarily, but like Levi said...where's the line?
Immediately jumping into the next book because I need Levi and Dominic to be okay.

This was good but painful. The first like 25% or so was super sweet. I loved Levi's parents meeting Dominic (his parents are so cute. Both their families are perfect, really) and

saying "I love you," for the first time, and all of that. But as soon as Dominic relapsed I could just feel everything start to spiral for the rest of the book, and it was ROUGH. And that scene where Dominic tries to hurt Levi so he'll leave because he has to go back and do more gambling!!! And in the end when he's gambling again and Levi punches him. LOTS OF ANGST, although I'm looking forward to them reconciling, so I imagine it'll be worth it in the end. I also liked seeing Levi possibly going to get real therapy (although I'm suspicious because tbh I've suspected Natasha of being the killer since the first book, which could be way off base, but nothing that's happened has dissuaded me of this theory yet). And I liked seeing Dominic relapse (as painful as it may have been) because it felt realistic that being put in a situation like that would have him faltering.
I had been reluctant to read this book because of the blurb. I just couldn't bear to read anything where Dominic and Levi had problems. Which is why I waited until the fourth book came out. Oh, boy.
The tension in this book from Levi's two cases and Dominic's one case was bad enough, but everything happening with them just made that tension go sky high. The intensity of so many parts of this book made my heart pound.
Now I'm off to read "One-eyed Royals." Can I hope that my heart will get a little bit of a reprieve?

As usual, the writing is very good, but this one seemed a bit slower to me and I was definitely kind of bored the first 40%. The first two just felt so much faster and I liked that, though this one did definitely pick up. Dominic of course was just fucking awful and I gotta admit,

I'm pretty disappointed knowing that he and Levi are going to get back together. I mean, I do want Dominic to get help and stop being a fuckhead, but this didn't hurt like I thought it would and I think that's because I don't really want him and Levi together anymore. He crossed some lines and yeah I know, he's different in the throes of his addiction, and whatever, but no. I'm glad Levi is seeking help, it was painful watching him unravel. Rohan was an asshole, right? Interested to see how this all plays out, looking forward to the next one, hope it goes back to moving faster!
Unbelievable series. I’m in utter awe over the writing, research and handling of addiction. Brilliant truly.

And these get better and better. Absolutely in love with this couple and continued mindfuck of a mystery.

DNF, as addiction isn't that entertaining for me. Shame, because the writing is good.
