I really like Lauren Blakey’s books usually, but this one was just rather blah. She’s a brilliant chemist but is also the painfully naive and dumb American who thinks moving to Paris and learning a new language is like a Disney movie or something? I found the main female character really annoying. I also found the whole obsession with perfumes annoying, and the way they described the process of making perfumes and formulating them was basically
Like “add a dash of honeysuckle, some vanilla and there you go!” Like it was some 15 minute easy dinner recipe. The female main character’s entire personality cannot be just being a talkative extrovert who likes bright colors, Paris and perfumes if you expect me to like her. She had zero depth. The MMC was good, but I did listen to the audiobook and maybe his character was just saved by his voice. Her narrator was not good and did a TERRIBLE British accent, so when she did his voice it was cringeworthy. Also the obsession the author had with constantly putting in idioms was eye roll inducing.

Cute story. It was a little tense because both characters count down the days until they’re separated, and never really have a discussion about it, so their lack of communication creates drama. Insert eye roll here. Lots of steam, which was great, but we could have used more story.
