‘That was pretty good,’ I thought, before bursting into tears
I am disappointed that I didn’t like this as much as I thought I would. It feels weird only giving it a 3 star rating. Halsey is brilliant and I love her.

I felt inspired to listen to the audiobook on Spotify and I feel like perhaps I should have listened to the audiobook from the start. Oh well.

I don't know much about poetry and though I'm an avid reader, I'll admit I only picked this up because Halsey wrote it.
With that said, I really loved the intimate picture this gave me of a person I've only seen from afar. This poetry felt rough and chaotic, which felt true to who Halsey is (or how she sees herself/how she wishes to be portrayed in a public manner). I loved the interweaving of songs that have been released, and fragments of what would be released in albums after this book was published. Her poetry felt rhythmic and though it's all meant to be spoken word, it still felt musical at times.
I enjoyed this collection. I think Halseys capacity to create art across several mediums is exceptional and this collection further proves that.

I don’t really read poetry so I don’t have much to compare this to, I was just interested because I adore Halsey’s music. There was some haunting imagery in some of these poems and definitely some raw emotions you could feel through the poetry.

"LISTEN
And then yell
at the top of your lungs.
Be a voice
for all those
who have prisoner tongues,
for the people
who had to grow up
way too young,
there is work to be done,
there are songs to be sung,
Lord knows there's a
war
to be
won."

★★★★
NOW THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE POETRY. none of those simple sentences broken up by hitting the space bar. These were COMPLEX with their structure and wordplay. This was probably the best poetry collection I've read (and I'm not a poetry fan to begin with!).
trigger warnings: rape and sexual abuse, drugs, abusive relationships, miscarriage.
