I really like Halsey’s songs, and I went into this book thinking I would love it as well. Sadly, I ended up having pretty mixed feelings about it.
I feel like this book is just so long, it was a bit like reading a first draft.
Some poems are really great, made me feel emotions and I enjoyed them a lot. However, others kind of fell flat and it seemed like there was no real purpose to them. They were not necessarily bad, but maybe a bit boring?
I’m a bit sad because I feel like if some of those less good poems had been removed, this book could have been really great!

I’ve always been a huge fan of Halsey so when she announced her poetry collection I pre-ordered it instantly. It was nice to see even more into her mind and her experiences. She’s raw and not perfect and she embraces that both with her openness and her writing style. I’ve seen some reviews critiquing her writing and her poetic-ness, but it wouldn’t be Halsey if they were some perfect “by the book” poems. Her lyrics in songs are like poems and her poems are like lyrics, and that’s exactly how her collection reads.
I liked all of her poems even if I couldn’t relate or “feel” it. I was proud of her for releasing Manic and I’m proud of her for releasing this and for sharing more of herself with us.

hello i am now going to write reviews so i can actually remember what i thought about books.
i usually don’t read poetry but i had heard good things and needed a quick read. i enjoyed it but it wasn’t amazing or anything. some of the poems were good but others were repetitive and sorta boring.

I really enjoyed this collection and had several highlighted as ones to go back to. The only reason I refrained from five stars is I couldn't this first time through see a consistent theme to these pieces.
Some powerful moments in this book! I recognized several poems that had some lyrics in them too, and I'm wondering if these poems were the origins of some of her songs.
I have a hard time not giving 5 stars to poetry collections because it feels like a piece of their soul and who am I to judge that? A lot of her writing speaks loudly to my heart and I’m glad I read this.

Wow. This is now my favorite poetry book I’ve ever read. Halsey’s ability to portray complex emotions and relationships made this an extremely enjoyable read. Each line felt well thought out, and every word intentionally placed to evoke specific emotions from the reader. Furthermore, each poem’s structure was used to amplify the message. Coupled with fantastic imagery, each poem was a work of art in itself. I hope she publishes more of her writing in the future!
