Watson and Holmes are on a case to help a young lady Mary Morstan solve a mystery as to why she receives a valuable pearl annually and maybe discover if it has anything to do with her father captain Morstan’s death. The three meet with Thaddeus Sholto and learn of a treasure that his father smuggled home from India. Sherlock deduces several things as to information about the treasure that the local constable is unable to figure out. Holmes continues to get closer to the answer but the final story comes from a one legged man named Jonathan Small. Small was in India when the treasure was originally hidden by him and three other men. They made a vow with each other to split the treasure 4 ways and they were the four. As the war with the British starts the 4 men are separated and imprisoned. Small tells how they were double crossed by Sholto and he was seeking revenge. Good little story.

Enjoyed this very quick read. The story engaged me from the beginning but wasn't quite as interesting as A Study in Scarlet.
Holmes and Watson are contacted by a young woman whose father has been missing for several years. She has been summoned by the son of one of her father's military buddies.
The book provides a backstory that takes place in India which was brief. Holmes strangely enough shoots up cocaine to stimulate his mind when he doesn't have a case which Dr. Watson is not pleased about and tries to deter him from using it. The Sign of Four did endear Dr. Watson to me even more. I do love his character and find him throughout the book more interesting than Holmes.

Reduced the rating due to some heavy-handed racism. I didn’t remember this from when I was a kid. I still love Sherlock Holmes, but question whether that would be true if it weren’t for nostalgia.
