My wife, awesome woman that she is, got me this book for Christmas of 2013. I have just finished the book now, not because it was a long read, but because we read the chapters as we worked our way through the Coen Brothers’ films. In fact, I read the book twice, because I would read each chapter to myself before watching (well, re-watching in most cases) the film, and then afterward, I would read the chapter aloud to her. What a wonderful way to work through the first ten films of the Coen Brothers canon!
Robson does a fantastic job of supplying an entertaining array of facts and analysis of each film. Pulling from interviews with the brothers themselves as well as from interviews with actors, set designers, and cinematographers, he provides insight into each film at just about every stage of production, from the writing of the script to the features available on the DVDs. Robson's only disservice is the short shrift given to Intolerable Cruelty, which gets less attention than his overview of Crimewave and The Naked Man, in which the Coen's played a significantly smaller role. Perhaps he was in a hurry to be done with his book. Aside from that one oversight, however, Robson does a great job. He has created a book that is as funny and intellectual as the Coen brothers themselves.
