I quite liked book one and two of this series but feel greatly let down by three and four. Info dumping all of this exposition about Ropa's grandmother here into the fourth book slows down the pace considerably. It's a very weird way to construct a series overall - it's too late to just be finding out all of this important information in tedious infodumps now in book four. So much of this book is just rehashing what's happened in the previous books or just scene for scene replaying it (fighting the same enemies, same wizard duel, etc.).
This book's plot is all over the place and it advances in fits and starts. One exciting thing happens and then you have fifty pages of downtime and that's just the book throughout.
Having the hero/heroine accused of the crime is one of my biggest pet peeves in books, TV or movies. It's a lame way to drum up fake drama when you know they didn't do it and you know that the rest of the series isn't going to take place with the lead character in jail. This book didn't even care about the accusation anyway - it never really came to anything and it was just handwaived away.
By the time we finally got to the cliffhanger I didn't care at all. I think I'm done with this series.

This is the 4th book of the series. The plot slows down a bit compared to the first two but is faster than the third one. This book definitely pushed the character into a downward spiral and made her question herself and her friends. It was good, but definitely a book that is leading to the final book of the series rather than a great standalone book.

Another fun adventure. I did feel that this one was a little all over the place. We get to the title location right away, but then it takes the entire book to get back there. There were several new plot developments, but not all of them are tied up or explained. Guess I’ll have to wait until the next book comes out to get some answers.

Ropa Moyo is now working for the English Sorcerer Royal, hoping for better treatment and pay than the Scottish magicians gave her, but still finds herself as a piece in the games the rich magicians play.
But after an enemy hints at a secret her grandmother is keeping from her, she tries to rush home, but gets sidetracked with a job, but when she gets home...
As this is book four in the series, I don't want to give out spoilers from this or previous books. But I can say Ropa has matured a lot since the last book(s). She's still stubborn, but her use of slang is reduced and she is also starting to present herself more maturely, and I enjoyed this book a lot more than the others.
It moves at a really good pace, and I wanted to know what was going to happen! Sadly, though, this left off at a very steep cliffhanger, (grrr). I get why, and it does add to the story/plot/mystery/etc, but I hate cliffhangers, especially ones at this height, so that affects the brightness of the stars because now I have to wait for the next book!

Ropa has left behind Scottish magic to serve the English but fate is not going to let her get away so easily. Her grandmother is murdered with Ropa being the prime suspect at the same time an old enemy resurfaces. As Ropa follows the clues to her grandmother’s killer she faces betrayal from friends and help from unexpected sources.
At the end of the last book Ropa turned her back on Scottish magic and threw in her lot with the English which I thought was a mistake and you know, it turned out I was right. An indeterminate amount of time seems to have passed since the end of the last book with Ropa doing a couple of jobs for her new English boss. But then she goes home and finds her grandmother murdered and the police searching for her. Confused as to who she can trust, she is betrayed by a close friend but also finds out who her real friends are. She learns more about her grandmother’s past, some good, some bad, and learns more about those trying to bring back a magician from the dead and basically start a war between Scottish magicians. The action moves quickly but the book ends on a cliffhanger so I really hope the next entry is coming out soon. Recommended

I think in less dark times I would have been more into this - love the series and the world.
