Would have finished in one sitting had I not been making dinner. The from the hip voice endeared me most. There is somehow so much violence in this book, but the singularity of this voice blends it into something calmer, more ephemeral.

It's a book of vignettes, so it's almost like looking at photographs. It's not really a story. The first few are connected, they deal with the main character's childhood. I liked this part best. The author is great at describing the small town and its inhabitants, she only needs a few pages to make you feel like you know everything about this place.
The second part is about her career working with horses. After that, it's just about a different person almost every page and I found myself getting distracted.
I enjoyed the fact that the author managed to create a character with a distinct voice, but then at the end I read the book is based on interviews. That kind of spoiled it for me.
What I didn't like was that there's no emotion at all. Even when Sonia gets raped as a 17 year old it's just 'oh yeah, well, that happened', like it wasn't a big deal, and she just gets up to go work in the same place as the guy who did it.
It's almost all about working with horses at race tracks, which obviously involves a lot of animal cruelty. Not something I enjoyed reading about.
It's well-written, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you specifically enjoy reading about horses.

I would give this book 10 stars if I could.. a series of vignettes one horsewomen’s life with horses and all the crazy horse people that come along with it. Required reading for anyone that loves horses. I think non horsey folk would enjoy it too. Niche social realism.
