I stopped reading after 125 pages. It got really repetitive! There are only so many times to read how important books were to the troops, or how grateful the soldiers were. This would have been a great series of articles but not a full-length book.

While I'm not a fan of non-fiction as a general rule, the ones I do read, I tend to love. This is one of those books. When Books Went to War is about how the US came together to deliver paperback books to the military during World War II. It was fascinating to learn about the book productions and the joy they brought to the troops. This is a subject matter that not many people actually know about, and I found it very informative. ASEs paved the way to veteran education programs and changed the way book publishing works.

A book about books. Where books made a huge difference. What a book!!

This was an informative and interesting glimpse into the program that blossomed into the GI bill, which opened up higher education to the masses. Every time I read about World War II, I understand patriotism. However, whatever feelings of patriotism I've had peter out and die when faced with the reality of American politics both then and now. The red tape implemented by the government in terms of acquisition and distribution, and the attempts to halt service members from voting while overseas is sickening. Service members finding comfort and escape from the horrors of war in books makes these historical figures into the humans they were.

I wish that I'd loved this book. I loved the information, just not the writing. This could easily have been half the length while losing nothing. I listened to the audiobook at 1.5 speed, which helped.

three things
the power of books
fighting for the freedom to read
historical but very relevant to current times

side note - some of the most popular books are out of print - i would like to read them

Not the best written book but fascinating information and increased my appreciation of books and freedom of the press. Amazing what can happen when you make books available to all!

A true testament to the power of reading. I loved learning about this little-known part of World War II. It truly warmed my heart to read about the efforts American civilians went through to put books into the hands of soldiers.
