This was an unexpected delight. All three of these short stories had a protagonist that was a little banged up and world-weary (hitman, ex-con bar bouncer, Navy SEAL), paired with someone that had been knocked around a bit by life but hadn’t lost their positive outlook (surprisingly naive drug-dealing waiter, free clinic doctor, and homeless kid who planned on being president someday).

Despite the relative brevity of the stories, I got invested in the characters and was sad when they ended. There’s not a lot of explicit content - which I realize is a pro for some and a con for others - but I enjoyed them a lot regardless. I just wish I could have gotten a little bit more, especially the first story. I would love a glimpse into their future.

Three novellas in one book. I think my favorite was the second story, which was a little less intense, but I really enjoyed all three.

Really enjoyed this. As always, Kos has a knack for setting up relationships between the most prickly of personalities and making it seem entirely effortless - whether it's a privileged rich kid doctor and an ex-con, or a soldier with PTSD and an ex-hooker. All of these guys are at the moderate to severe end of the messed up scale, which means you just really, really want to see them happy, and that's what you get given with this collection. My only complaint is that I wish these stories were longer - particularly In Case of Emergency, which really sank its hooks into me good and deep despite being quite short. I could happily have read a whole book about Kev and Marcin. Highly recommended!
