whilst i admire the bare faced honesty.......this isnt a good BOOK. it's reflective and thought-provoking as an essay on how to understand the self, and dysthymia, through a therapeutic lens but im not sure the format works

I think it’s very brave (and unique! I’ve never read anything like this) to broadcast your therapy sessions to millions of strangers, but this kind of goes nowhere and it feels very rushed, especially towards the end. I do see myself in her and I relate to a lot of this, but I just wish this was a bit more polished.
her psychiatrist is ridiculously unhelpful and some of their comments truly border on unprofessionalism with how often they bring up unrelated disorders that clearly stress baek out, and then wave them away like it’s nothing. but you can’t really wave away HPD, schizophrenia, and “adult onset ADHD” (which isn’t in the ICD because it doesn’t exist…so what on earth where they talking about?) to a client who has such low self-esteem and is desperately trying to find a solution to her problem. I hope that if baek is still in therapy, she is seeing a much better doctor.

5 stars alone for putting their therapy transcript verbatim in print. I didn’t realize this was going to be 90% transcript 10% personal interpretation, I somewhat wish it was the other way around, but this was a quick listen. I liked the authors use of personal experience and voice and would definitely read the next one. I appreciated that the psychiatrist had their own note at the end to describe feeling aware of the recording during sessions and how that impacted quality of care and realizing improvements. Overall I enjoyed listening to this and am glad that people are brave enough to put things out there for others to relate to and not to feel so alone!
