This book was recommended to me and I won't be lying if I say I started it off with high expectations.
Perhaps this was the reason why I found it hard to complete it at the end. It's a good plot, heart-breaking, and the connections with nature made were beautiful. Written well.
Perhaps I was disappointed due to the expectations I'd attached upon starting it.

This is a gripping story, hard to put down. But I'm not sure the mother was completely believable. A long book but a fast read. A long book, but a fast read. Broken "hearts;" remote and closed off emotions; brought forward by an unusual man who "whispers" to horses. The ending is somewhat contrived (though not nearly so much so as the movie). If you've seen the movie ... the ending is completely different (and better) in the book.

This book has such a great story, and the beginning was the perfect was to start it. I watched the movie after reading it, but the book was much better.

There is a horrific accident at the beginning of the novel and Grace and her horse Pilgrim are severely injured and traumatised by it. It is a very gripping start. Then the slow process of healing has to somehow take place so that family and horse aren't left in agony. A drastic move to follow a stranger half way across the continent puts a number of things in motion.

The healing work of Tom Booker with Pilgrim was truly fascinating to read about. I know nothing about horses but it certainly felt like Nicholas Evans knew what he was writing about. I also loved all the fax machines (and the fact that they did indeed coincide with cell phones). The other bits of the story weren't quite as interesting for me.
