The world building just wasn't there for me in this one in the ways I was hoping. There could have been such a better use of the dragons and the politics surrounding these characters. Let's also not forget to mention the absolute heightened use of gore and violence that just acts as an excuse for Raeve to continually run away from doing hard things. I appreciated Parker's attempt to add depth with some chapters from other viewpoints but I wish there had been more of that and less frivolous musings from Raeve about how everyone she gets close to dies. Kaan and Veya were more complex characters and I'm hoping there's more from these siblings in the next book.

I wanted to give this book a read because the premise sounded interesting to me when I read the synopsis. That being said, while there were things I enjoyed, such as the characters themselves and the magic system, I felt like there was just far too much going on. Every moment, there was an added extra layer of things that the reader has to try to comprehend on top of trying to understand the elemental magic system, the lore of the dragons, and the backstory of the main character. I definitely didn’t dislike the book but I did get a bit overwhelmed and was ready to be done by the end. An interesting concept, though.

I cannot begin to describe how much I loved this book. The world felt so full and magical. Sometimes fantasy's that have strong romance storylines fall flat in other areas but I didn't feel like that with this story. I cannot wait for the next book to come out!

The trigger warnings for the audiobook are read at the end, not very helpful. As well, the character list download from the publisher is only mentioned at the end of the book as well.

The book started off slow and the world building was a bit awkward until you get into the rhythm of the book and the setup gets going but that takes over a good 1/4 of the book to get there, give it a chance. I read a character and brief plot summary from Crew Fiction.com that didn’t have too many spoilers but also helped me with placing everything in context in the audiobook not having a print copy character list to reference. It made me want to continue reading and I was assured readers are mixed in their like/dislike of this book.

It was worthwhile to persevere and I’ll be reading the sequel. The world building is interesting once you get further, way further in.

1. raeve is cringe. she’s not like other girls 😍  she likes the cold... and kills plants... edgy. she's giving ebony darkness raven way or whatever from that harry potter fic.
2. the romance is also cringe. Kaan is so BIG and HUGE and his shoulders are MASSIVE did i mention he's MONSTROUS???
3. idk what is going on in this world but whatever. but i will say this: the dragons are more interesting than other series (****** ****)
4. this is essentially tog/acotar fanfic. with the whole "reveal" about raeve, kaan being the king of feminism like rhysand lmfao, and also kaan having totally not-cassian and not-azriel as his cronies bye.

will i read book 2? probably lol the mystery aspect is intriguing enough i suppose.
