This book was really neat. The pity was it was a pendulum swinging between stuff I hated and stuff I loved. The world was complex and interesting to read about, but many, many times it let the romance plot shoot the pacing of the entire story in the foot. There was a point where it all became exhausting and felt like a solid chunk of chapters in the middle could have been completely eliminated. I cannot think of any purpose for them other than just being a slice of life moment.

However, the reason it was so frustrating when these chapters would happen was because the rest of the book was fantastic. If it weren't for the messily executed romance plot and repetitive bits, it would have sat up there with my favorite romantasies. Which are extremely hard to touch.

The action was fantastic and the world was truly a highlight. I love the inclusion of the glossary and index. Which may not be everyones cup of tea but it was definitely mine. Some of the romance scenes were perfectly steamy
(when Kaan gives her his necklace.... Bro..... I was kicking my feet. )
and the plot itself was constantly surprising and fun.

Overall, I enjoyed it. The low rating sadly comes purely from the slog of the middle bit. It truly frustrated me. It made me sad because it was so obvious this writer was great, but I felt she was bogged down by the need for the egregious romance.

I would recommend to someone who can get through that stuff though!

DID NOT FINISH: 26%

It started strong, the very beginning where it sets up the world mythos was excellent but it just went down hill from there and after the line "I think that's a plop of spangle poop" I really struggled to keep going.

The writing style of this book just isn't for me and I was not enjoying it and I'm not for forcing myself to plough through a book I'm not enjoying.

Maybe this wasn't for me, but i feel like I spent 20 hours of this book desperate for it to go somewhere. It felt like 3/100 secrets were solved here. I LOVE the world building. The dragons, the paper larks. Its so cool. But the fmc drives me batty with her recklessness especially when she's supposed to be a top assassin and the mmc is hot. I like how he talks to her but bro, barely any actual movement in their misunderstandings. This book should have been half as long. Probably won't keep going which is a bummer.

Love but how the MC almsot got raped is just... no. Very confusing at times, but I figured it out very quickly

the ending!? One, whose the other? It mentioned irs using Raeves body as a host; so i suspect its either Elluin or Sereme

I cant wait for the next book. Poor Nee, and Kyazari ending up being Kaans daughter!? (I spoiled it for myself so I knew) Wow.

It’s hard to put into words what I thought of this book. I understand why it’s booktok popular and why people either love it or hate it.

It requires a bit more commitment than your average romantasy — you have to be willing to read the glossary and stick through all the confusing back and forth between Raeve’s POV and the diary pages. But if you persist, you’re in for a helluva ride.

The world building is some of my favorite I’ve read this year. It’s all so lush and gorgeous! The dragons are amazing, and the characters feel real and genuine. It all culminates in grand reveals that will leave you internally screaming and desperate for the next one.

HOWEVER. There were a couple of things that keep this from being a perfect 5 to me.

1: The dialogue. While the prose is lyrical and imaginative, the dialogue didn’t match.  Some of it felt juvenile and cringey to me.

2: The Fate herder.
You’re telling me there’s literally a magical creature in this world whose sole job is make people stay wherever the plot requires them to be, then immediately skedaddle out of existence? …Ok? That’s too convenient of a solution to me.

All in all though, this is a solid romantasy that’s great for anyone into dragons, heavy world building, and dark fantasy — and I mean DARK. There were times when the descriptions of gore or suffering bordered on too much for me. But if you have a strong stomach, you should be good!

I was in this story from the start and enjoyed it until about 10% of the book was left. I have no idea what happened in the last chapters of the book. I think we were introduced to new characters and plot lines, but if there were any hints of them along the way, I did not see them. The end of the book is so confusing. It’s almost like the author suddenly remembered that there had to be a book 2. I really did like it up until the end. Although, I could have done without the random POVs. They felt unnecessary and spoon fed the story too much. I guess I’ll read book 2 when it comes out. If only just to see if the story connects in some way.

I’ve fallen in love with yet another fictional world. This book is so beautifully written and the descriptive details are magical! Kaan and Raeve are definitely two of my new favorite characters. The emotions that I felt while reading this were intense! The love that Kaan has for Raeve is completely unmatched and the heartbreak of watching her push her feelings down because she thought herself so unworthy of love just hit my soul so deeply. I wish I had read it sooner and I can’t wait for the next book release!
