The world building is a major function of this book. Sarah A Parker worked hard to build a beautiful world that, while it takes a but to get into, is fun to dive into.

The story is pretty bloody and YA-brand dark, but also clunky due to it's dialogue and characters.

Raeve is a "special" assassin with a dark past that's barely expanded on. She loses those close to her - as we're reminded constantly - so she walls off her heart. She has no qualms with slaughtering people, yet when she sees other people kill she gets very squeamish. She also spends a tremendous amount of time being a damsel in distress because "she's too powerful and dangerous to have her powers."

Kaan
is a Daga-Mรณrrk - reviewed as a being of legend -
able to bond more intimately with his dragon than the average fae. Do we get to really understand what that means other than 2 lukewarm examples? Not really. He's also a character more akin to a beast than a fae (think humans with point ears, long lives, and access to magic) with all the grunting and growling he does.

I'd still read the second book if it was brought to me because of the world, but I wouldn't seek it out.

The prologue was rough. Did not at all hold my attention and almost made me quit. But a little few minute crash course on the world building from tiktok set me right. I enjoyed this world and characters a lot. Iโ€™m very excited for next years sequel. I think Iโ€™m going to enjoy this series for a long time.

I loved this book, was perfect way to get lost in another world. Lots of world building with a good balance of story.
I read the last 2 thirds of the book in one day, I was reading as I did everything - could hardly put it down.
I am looking forward to book 2!

This book is a fast-paced fantasy that draws you into a world brimming with magic, dragons, and emotional depth. The protagonist, Raeve, is tough and resilient, facing hardship with quiet determination. Her journey through loss and personal growth kept me hooked, as she navigates a world full of obstacles while staying true to herself.

The romance between Raeve and Kaan is intense, with Kaanโ€™s powerful presence constantly pulling Raeve in, despite her attempts to distance herself. Their push-and-pull dynamic creates an emotional tension thatโ€™s compelling, and the chemistry between them is undeniable. Itโ€™s this dynamic that makes their relationship so engaging.

The magic system in the story, tied to the elements and gifted by the creators, is a fascinating aspect of the plot. The prologue sets up this mystical force beautifully, establishing it as both a gift and a crucial part of the story. Raeveโ€™s connection to this power is central to her journey, and I enjoyed how it was portrayedโ€”complex, vivid, and integral to the unfolding events. Iโ€™m excited to see more of this magic in the next book.

The storyโ€™s pace is one of its strongest elements. From the very start, the action keeps moving, and the twists and turns never slow down. I found myself eagerly turning pages to see what would happen next, whether it was a thrilling action sequence or a key moment in Raeveโ€™s emotional journey.

While the dragons are a key part of the world, I did wish they had a more prominent presence in this book. Their mythology is intriguing, and Iโ€™m hoping future installments will explore their role more deeply. Still, the magic and the character dynamics were enough to keep the story engaging.

For those new to romantasy, this book is a great introduction. The romance is steamy and open-door, while the elemental magic adds a layer of fantasy that keeps things fresh. The mix of adventure, romance, and magic strikes a perfect balance for newcomers to the genre.

The audiobook, narrated by Sarah Mollo-Christiensen and Fajer Al-Kaisi, brings the story to life. Mollo-Christiensen adds emotional depth to Raeveโ€™s journey, while Al-Kaisi intensifies the more dramatic and passionate moments-most notably in the prologue. Their performances elevate the overall experience.

This book has so much to offer. There is a well thought out, detailed setting with superb worlds building. There's a beautiful romance that is at once heartbreaking and hopeful. The characters act in ways that feel true the characters, even though their decisions can be at times frustrating.

This book made me feel.
