Plot? Never heard of her.

No character can go 2 pages without saying “fuck”. World building had potential but was never fully explained; very confusing at times and hard to follow. At times it was like reading TOG fanfiction because the FMC wants to be Aelin so bad. Very juvenile humor. The writing tried so much to be high-fantasy level and failed. The POV of Veya had no differentiation from Raeve; they read like the same person.

Things just happen to Raeve; she doesn’t do anything to move the plot forward because she has no interests or motivations or duties beyond wanting revenge. And we had practically no page time with Essi so we can’t even get a feel for how deep that relationship went to warrant such a dedicated hunt for Zharros. Raeve makes being an assassin her entire personality. Other events or people mentioned are never explained (Fallon) so we are in the dark the entire time, unable to understand why Raeve is so emotionally closed off.

Kaan also feels like a copy of Rhys from ACOTAR, in a different font. The Raeve/Kaan relationship is apparently soooooo deep but from what foundation? There is practically none!

Toovah Trials….literally what was the point of that scene; it could be taken out and the book wouldn’t have changed at all. Classic example of random events with no purpose that do not add anything to the plot.

I liked the dragons and the premise of them being moons. Kept hoping this book would find its footing but alas.

Not going to lie, I put this one off not just because of the sheer size of it, but because of all the people talking about the glossary and the family trees, etc that they needed to read to be able to get through it. I just wasn't up for that type of fantasy. But I finally buckled down and read it. And I'm so glad I did.

**I also think there's different versions floating around. A lot of reviews I read stated that the family tree and glossaries were located in the front of the book, mine was in the back so I didn't even look at it until the very end. Was this wise? Who knows. But I also didn't feel completely overwhelmed just starting the book.

This book is definitely the higher end of fantasy. There is TONS of world building and I can see where it gets confusing. I mixed up some of the creators from time to time and even some of the characters because it was so vast. But even with that, I still really enjoyed this one. Parker does a really good job of setting this world and this magic system. And dragons - who doesn't love a book with dragons??

The plot was plotting the whole time and I was playing catch up, just trying to figure it out but it was always one step ahead of me. There were so many twists that by the end, I felt like a pretzel. But they were soooo good. And they have me so excited for the second book - which I need like now.

So why not 5 stars? Mainly the female MC - Reave. She's a very complicated character - and honestly she has good reason for this - BUT there was a lot about her that was very off putting. Her personality is almost at odds with itself so it makes it really hard to understand her and the way she treats people. I'm looking forward to book 2 now that secrets have been revealed to see how she moves forward. But it's almost like she's a sullen teenager at times, because she refuses to accept her past or even know it and just wants to focus on one thing - revenge. Which, we can all tell is not going to end well.

Overall, even though it took me awhile to read, I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be counting the days until I have the next one.

4.5 stars. I guess I'm on the side of readers who enjoyed this book. There's not a lot of action...just a huge amount of world building and plot building, and the story moves along. There is a cliffhanger, and I'm definitely going to read the second book whenever that comes out. There are a lot of characters to keep track of in the beginning, and I found myself looking through the index a few times to get characters straight in my head, or understand the terminology that was used. There are dragons involved, and they play an overarching role in this book, but they are not necessarily forefront of your mind. I'm interested to see how this plays out.
