This one has me confused. I couldn’t stop reading but found it difficult to visualise. Loved parts and frustrated with parts. Still I want to read the next in the series.

Book one in a series, this novel laid entrancing groundwork through intricate world building. I enjoyed the poetic writing style, the unique mythology, and the brewing story. I wish I'd waited to read this once the series is complete, because I'm afraid I won't remember much of the complex weaving that took place throughout this very long book when the time comes to read the next in the series.

Long but entertaining

meh. went back and forth on my thoughts for this one. loved the dragons and the assassins and all the action scenes.
really liked the mystery and the concept behind “the other”

but the love story was not for me (
i HATE the “they’ve already fallen in love in a past life” trope, feels like there’s just way less buildup or falling in love to me
), and i get that this is a series but i felt like it was all buildup and NOTHING got resolved which made for a very unsatisfying ending. probably won’t be reading the next one

The writing (prose) felt juvenile and self-indulgent to the point of being distracting. There was so much telling and not showing. The author constantly referred to characters as "females" and "males" instead of women and men, which felt really dehumanizing and incel-y. The main character was hard to like and read very much as a whumpy Mary Sue. The beginning was filled with so much lengthy world building exposition that felt unanchored by the lack of actual character introduction until later.

I’ll be honest, I did spend the first half or so of this book confused. I then thought I understood most of it and the epilogue went and confused me again

Horrible set up world building felt simplistic yet too complex to follow or understand. Cringy charaterisations and insufferable main character

I didn't like the writing style. The pace was too slow and wasn't able to capture my interest after the halfway mark.
