Brinkley Saunders has a secret.
To everyone in the academic world she left behind, she lost it all when she dropped out of grad school. Once a rising star following in her mother’s footsteps, she’s now an administrative assistant at an insurance agency—or so they think.
First, Thank you to Netgalley and Gallery Books for the ARC of Heartbreak for Hire prior to it's release in July!
An adorable, can't put down book that made me laugh out loud and wish that Brinkley Saunders was my friend. Oh how I wish she could take down some of my past ex's. I loved this book sooooo much. The characters, the setting, the plot, the ending are all amazing. I feel like this story was written especially for me. Loved the characters and the banter back and forth was not boring or cliche. An all around great rom-com beach read for this summer.
If you enjoy a well written story that meshes romance, great characters, and encouraging goals and dreams, then this book might be for you.

"Dealing with the male ego was a lot like painting." From the first sentence, I was anticipating what was to come. I love a good hook!
Brinkley tackles egos for a living, hired to humiliate or take down men who have taken advantage of women through various relationships. She's personally motivated by grudges she holds from her past. When her boss introduces men to the work environment, Brinkley and her counterparts aren't ready for the change, but maybe it's what they need to finally move on from their own heartaches.
I had high expectations heading into this read. I love the cover and summary so much. I think the storyline is fun and entertaining but rather abrupt in some aspects. The transitioning from calm to heated or a casual conversation to steam was like zero to sixty. I felt like I'd been leaning on a door eavesdropping only to have it flung open and leaving me to fall crashing to the floor. The resolution for misunderstandings was rather quick as well between characters.
Ultimately, it has a lot of great moments. I could see it being a five star read had those moments been more subtle. Brinkley's swings from hot to cold and back lacks a thread of believability for me.
Thank you to Gallery Books and NetGalley for the advanced copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

This book felt like “what if that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Susan Sarandon movie was a romance novel but with more infuriating characters and a hint of First Wives Club and a dash of Charlie’s Angels.”
The chemistry between Brinkley and Mark is delicious, but the external conflicts driven by secondary characters made me want to throw the book. A late plot twist is completely unbelievable if you know anything about academia and informed consent for studies, and the thread of parental alienation was over the top for me.
A solid read overall, but a 3.5 stars for me.

Eh, just not for me
Loved it. Snappy, fast read. Quippy, smart, and hilarious in parts. Got right to the story and kept it moving to find out what happens in the next “episode.” :)

There were parts of this book I liked, but overall I found Brinkley to be whiney and unlikable. I just couldn't wrap my head around her vision of academia. I also thought her job was awful, and while she supposedly learned that what they were doing was wrong (enacting revenge on people and ruining their lives seemed a bit over the top), I don't think that message was loud enough. Everyone was put into a box, and it seemed like they stayed there. No recognition that people are complicated and nuanced and can't be defined by one moment or action in time. I think if the author had focused a little more on that learning curve it would have been a better book. I also felt she was a bit unfair to Mark in the end. It came off as controlling rather than supportive.

Solid start but it went downhill pretty fast. The characters felt flat and the romance was eh :/
