This is a charming book from the perspective of a cat. While it does have a passing of a cat, it was done well and left me feeling hopeful for what was to come.

„A cat has nine lives. For three he plays, for three he strays and for three he stays.“

In this story we follow Grimalkin, a cat. When he dies, he actually should have left 8 lives, but due to unfortunate circumstances he can‘t go back alive, so he can choose, go directly to death and sleep forever or wander Edinburgh as a ghost cat for his 8 remaining lives. He chooses to wander Edinburgh, so we follow him through several decades and witness the changes in decor, fashion and technology, while also learning about some historical events.

I really enjoyed the footnotes that explained some historical events as well as some Edinburgh or Scottish things, that not everyone knows about. The story was written beautifully and I loved how intertwined the chosen timeslots were: the objects and people that reappear throughout the story really helped make the book interesting. All in all a great and cozy book for everyone who loves Edinburgh, cats and history.

I loved the concept of the book, but I wanted more from it. I originally thought Grimalkin would get full haunting lives, but really he got like a day? So much more could have been done, like the haunting during WW2, it could have been devastating and could have gone into so much more. I just felt like this book went too fast, and was severely lacking in what could have been.

DID NOT FINISH: 44%

I really want to continue but it's not as interesting as I anticipated. Also, I don't like the name Grimalkin, especially for a cat. It frustrated me every time I saw his name...
