I was almost disappointed by this book. It was sitting at an iffy 3 stars until the second half of the book when Mam decides to leave the woods with Howling and Feral. The second half was definitely the redemption for me. I thought the world-building could have used a little more effort and detail, but I'll let it pass. I really enjoyed the characters. i thought they were funny. I also really enjoyed the commentary on racism in America and how both good and evil can be found in many places. Overall, a solid read. Oh and I loved the narrator. She made this book A1.

sorrowland had me by the throat from the beginning, a book i needed to devour featuring our young, strong, Black girl Vern. she’s albino, half blind, queer and ran away from a cult. she gives birth to her children in the woods, and lives there for a few years. she’s absolutely amazing.
the second half of the book takes a sharp turn that i was blindsided by, and it truly felt like i was reading a different book. the characters are incredible, all so sure of themselves and knowing exactly who they are in their own skins. their relationships are amazing too, even the minor characters - but there’s suddenly mk ultra vibes and fungi superpowers.
the second part of the book felt like a slog to me, which was disappointing because i wanted to feel the way i did in the beginning. maybe if i knew what was going to happen i would have followed it better, despite my preference to go into books somewhat blind.
A wild ride of a book. Vern's story keeps you gripped, at times with tranquility, beauty, and pride, but often with a stubbornness born of horror, betrayal, and disgust. I enjoyed Solomon's voice tremendously, and while this book isn't my usual fare (a lot of parenting reflections, hunting, abuse, and a messy main character), it was written in a way that never let go of my throat, and I had no choice but to stay for the ride.
I appreciated the strong and unrepentantly independent thinking women and queer folks in this book. Flawed, hurting, and surviving. I appreciated the social critique seeded in the book, the Lakota women were some of my favorites, and the parts about mushrooms are always the best.
Even though it isn't perfect, I enjoyed the imperfections of this book, and most importantly I enjoyed the author's strong commitment to the world she birthed. I'm so glad I read this book.
