I listened to the audiobook and loved the narrator.
This book just throws us in and I loved that. It had good pacing. I enjoyed the writing.
This had classic horror elements while also having real life horror elements to it. It felt very fitting for the current climate of the US as it talks about things like racism, homophobia, transphobia, religious zealots, cults and so much more.
It could be triggering, so just be aware.
Vern and her children had so much depth, and while they weren’t always necessarily likable, it made sense why they acted the way they did.
This is my second book by Rivers Solomon, The Deep being the first. I have an ARC of Model Home and I will be starting that immediately. I love their writing style and the way they address very real issues.

Would I nominate this book for awards? Yes. Would I read it again? No.

Weird Lovecraftian dark fantasy that explores love, trauma, and civilizations' relationship with the natural world. Beautifully written. This book would pair well with "The Immortal Cells of Henrietta Lacks".

I really enjoyed this, it was weird and wonderful and dark with layers of complexity that kept me engaged as the story unfolded. There were also a lot of topics tackled in such a short book from religion to race,  to queer shame and government conspiracies. My only criticism is of the final part. While the story resolves, we never really learn about the people responsible, motivations, and consequences. Instead, we focus on Vern whose spikiness I love but I don't think we get enough character development to justify the focus being solely on her. I just wanted a bit more info.
