i said this when i started the book, and i stand with my opinion; this book would've been much more enjoyable in an audio book format. perhaps even a movie or a television show, if the adaptation was faithful enough. the reason why i think this was is because this book is different from the other mysteries i've read, which would normally be a good thing because i do like a bit of change. however, this one was different in a way that made the book a little uninteresting, and made me a tad bit doubtful about starting it. this thing was that this book is hyper-realistic.

normally, having a book, especially a mystery, being realistic is a positive point. the detective isn't a genius and the criminal isn't an evil mastermind. despite that being the case, i did not enjoy this book, with the reason being that the events were dully realistic. it was real, yes, but in a very dull manner. it read more like something similar to a book about true crime, which i would find a lot more boring than a mystery novel with exciting twists.

although i did not enjoy it to the level i would usually anticipate from a mystery novel, it was enjoyable. this is due to many factors which i will be discussing.

first and foremost would be the character writing. matsumoto-san's cast of characters were a group of very normal people mixed in with very unusual people. both of those groups were very well-written and were characterized realistically. they seemed human, which is a rare thing to witness in mystery novels, especially, i find.

the mystery itself was, honestly, pretty unremarkable and it seemed like a real crime that could very well happen. i think that, by omitting all the details about the crime, it was written to be an "impossible case", yet not in the traditional way. i found that, by removing all the details about the crime, the story became more character-driven than plot-driven, which is a bizarre thing to read about in a mystery novel. it made it a bit dull, in all honesty. the murderer was not an easy person to guess, but i was able to figure them out before the detective did. i suppose that could be because the detective's an elder person, though.

the writing style was unremarkable, and i don't really have much to say about it. it was simple and to-the-point, much like most mysteries. id say that it was descriptive to the correct amount, but not enough to comment on.

overall, this book was a bit average, both as a mystery and generally. i did enjoy it, though, which is why i gave it the rating i did.

It is a neatly written mystery thriller . The places where the detective travels to investigate the case have been described in a pleasant way capturing the cultures and traditions of people who live there .
