Everything comes together clearly in the end with a convoluted murder mystery that illuminates working and family patterns in 1960s Japan. (I felt a bit sorry for Inspector Imanishi's wife at times!) I'm intrigued to read more Matsumoto translated into English.

So so good, so intertwined and twisted, so LAYERED, so many turns and circles you‘re going through! This is a true experience, where every piece falls into place! I just wish the end would have been a bit longer, the reveal would have been a bit more thoroughly explained but I suppose the buildup was strong enough. Matsumoto is insane.

I'm not sure if its Matsumoto's writing style or how the book was translated into English but the dialogue is unnatural, and the plot is quite choppy. It moves from scene to scene with no direction which is quite a jarring experience. Sadly I have to put it down.

A very enjoyable detective story, I haven't read any Japanese investigative fiction before so this was a first for me. It was very hard to put it down, thoroughly enjoyed it. Towards the end I guessed who was the guilty party but the means I had no idea about.

Thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading more Japanese detective books, as well as the author.
