So I first read this book shortly after it came out and was a tad disappointed to say the least, mostly because the cover had blown me away and I wanted to book to as well. Anyway, while I was at the library the other day I stumbled across it again and figured, what the hey! I also got the audio version to listen to while commuting back and forth from work and school.

The book is about a girl Luce who has just transferred to Sword & Cross boarding school after a freak accident with her sort of/not really boyfriend at her old preppy school, Dover. Luce was thought to have been responsible for the murder of the boy, Trevor, and crazy as well since she claims to see these unheard of 'shadows'. Long story short she becomes infatuated with a guy, Daniel Grigori. At first Daniel is very standoffish and basically gives Luce the "Stay the heck away from me, I want nothing to do with you" vibe. Of course, Luce doesn't care and chases after him anyways. Meanwhile, you have Cam who wants Luce about as bad as she wants Daniel. The story evolves and you begin to uncover clues that lead to you finding out that
Spoiler 1. Daniel is an angel, 2. Luce has been reincarnated, multiple times. 3. Luce always dies after her and Daniel kiss/find each other/fall in love
Obviously that is the super condensed version, but you get the gist.

I'll start with my list of pros first.

1. I really liked the main concept of forbidden love, and the whole angel thing. I don't know, it just hits the spot for me.
2. Daniel and his 'stay away from me' attitude always left me wanting more from him.
3. Luce's friends, Arriane and Penn, were great supporting characters. Arriane with her witty and comedic relief, and Penn being the brains and the most stable student at Sword & Cross.

Now on to the cons...

1. Luce was...not the greatest. She was always doubting herself and I felt like the was over-dramatic at times to the point of me wanting to just knock some sense into her! I also felt that she did not have that great of a sense of judgement.
2. Refer to #1. I realize that I only have one con, but when that con is the main character and you're having to read about her the ENTIRE book, it has a major impact.

Overall, I liked this book more than I disliked it. It took me more time to adjust to Luce and her personality than usual, when it comes to main characters. This wouldn't be the first book that I'd recommend to someone, definitely one to read when you have absolutely NO IDEA what on earth you are looking for and have a lot of free time.

I'd recommend this book to those who like:

1. Concept of angels/immortality
2. Fantasy
3. Teen romance (of the forbidden kind that is...haha)
4. Love triangles
5. Lot's of plot twists
6. Very very dark and dreary wasteland type settings
7. Slight action

Think Twilight, but with fallen angels. 🤭

This was a comfort read for me years ago, I read it during a dark time in my life and it kept my mind off of that situation and on this story. So while the story is not a literary masterpiece, it holds a special place in my heart and forever will. The series also gets a lot better imo. ❤️

This book gave me a migraine and a stomachache. Thank you Luce Price and your boyfriend, what-his-name, for making me hate angel books now.

Meh this is one of those I probably should have read as soon as I acquired a copy. Many years ago. I might have liked it a bit more as I think my tastes have changed. I wasn’t really that impressed and won’t continue on with this series. Don’t let my review stop you though it’s likely my age and change in tastes!

The only word that could be used to describe the first two-thirds of this book are terrible. Luce is both Bella Swan and Edward Cullen in one. She is as annoying and indecisive as Bella and a stalker like Edward. However, I was holding onto the hope that the book would get good because the movie trailer looked so interesting.

The end was better. Although too much of the action was packed into it.
