Due to the time in which it takes place, any story involving a character coming out is going to be rife with homophobia. Well it is definitely a aspect of the story it is not the whole story.barnesbookshelf's review

tillie walden’s skill as a visual storyteller really shines in this memoir. it was an impactful read for me because even though it’s a memoir, i saw a lot of my teenaged self in it.

so much more than ice skating. The emotional depth and the way the author translated that into images blew me away. The Eisner Award for this book is so incredibly well deserved. It's only March, but I'm pretty sure this will end up being one of my favorite reads of the year!
