Jane Eyre

This was a long slow read, and at times I found myself wishing it was much shorter. We really get to read Jane's every thought. But at its conclusion I was thankful for it! I really felt like I had been on a long journey with Jane, and that I knew her, and was happy to have been at her side through every era of her life. The book got a tad religious towards its end and especially in its last pages but I can appreciate that perspective as well as any other and it didnt detract from the conclusion. I can't say I'll be jumping to pick it up again (I'm still a little put-off by the length!) but in time I can see myself leisurely re-reading this one simply out of fondness.

“I have for the first time found what I can truly love—I have found you. You are my sympathy—my better self—my good angel. I am bound to you with a strong attachment. I think you good, gifted, lovely: a fervent, a solemn passion is conceived in my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my centre and spring of life, wraps my existence about you, and, kindling in pure, powerful flame, fuses you and me in one.”

this is The book
I think this is the most fresh and modern piece of literature that came form the 19th century, Jane and Rochester's banter is delicious, Jane's views of life and the strength she has and the power she has over herself is outstanding. The chapters where she was wandering caught in her hurt and rêverie gutted me. She is such a delectable female character ughhh iloveher.
Rochester dressing as a gypsy was so chaotic and ridiculous, hes such a loserrr (also becaus of the wife locked in the attic too ofc I mean jesus christ) i like him tho (/o\)

ReAdEr I MaRrIeD hIm whatever

I just re-read this - hadn't read it since high school. I guess I didn't remember it very well! It was pretty shocking. Jane herself has to be one of the most bland characters in literature, but Mr. Rochester has to be one of the most sick and twisted! And her cousin Mr. Rivers is no better. The fact that she ends up with Rochester in the end is not exactly a feminist statement, sadly. But - I guess that's too much to expect.

It ain't no Pride and Prejudice.
