I'm really liking this concept.
Humans build portals to the spirit realm, decide they like living in that realm much better than this one, and all but abandon the earthly world.
Fawn is an orphan and one of the few who doesn't see what's so great about the spirit realm. She'd rather live fully in the real world while she can. She doesn't have much choice right now, though, because she works under indentured servitude in the realm. Her newest assignment lands her in a new place, the in between, where morals are gray and pain flows freely.
Her job in the in between, at a club called The Nocere, starts out well enough. Her coworkers are nice and there's a cute guy who works there who seems very interested in her.
But the positive start unravels as the true dark nature of The Nocere unfolds.
Good for people who want a fresh take on the dystopian genre.

I found the beginning incredibly confusing. I'm not saying this is a bad book, but since it was outside my normal genre and wasn't fitting well with me I decided to put it down.
Yet again, many thanks to Heather Carson for sending me a copy of this book! All opinions are my own!
What. A. Ride. This was such an interesting world that Carson created, I literally devoured the book in one single sitting because I HAD to know how things played out. The concept behind the world was fascinating and I loved every bit of detail we got about it.
I loved the side characters in this but I have sooooo many more questions about them. I loved Genie, and Vorie, and I loved Alister and Brayson. I need to know what happens to all of them ASAP.
As usual, I walked away with so many questions and now very many answers, but you can bet your butt I'll be back for book 2! I'm hooked and I need to know how things play out for Fawn.

Set in a dystopian world where it’s inhabitants have managed to cross to another realm. This realm is a spirit world where our loved ones have gone, after they died. It’s a beautiful place where you can manifest beautiful things, so many people cross over and leave the regular world.
Fawn and her friends are orphans, living in the world and serving indentures until they are at least 18. Fawn ends up working at The Nocere, a dark and creepy place, with clientèle you don’t want to mess with.
When something bad happens she knows she has to do something…
This is the first book of a trilogy and I loved it! Can’t wait to start & finish the next two!

Fawn was supposed to be free from the clutches of the mafia at eighteen but a crime she committed when she was younger tacked on another year of slavery to her sentence. Fawn learns that she is to work as a waitress for a new club called The Nocere that is neither in the world or in the realm, but is in between. The Nocere is meant for the worlds most notorious and vile, a place where evil can be itself. Heather Carson’s ghost story is unlike any other. Carson has taken elements of the sci-fi, fantasy, and dystopian genres to create a world where her characters are able to not only communicate with the dead but one where they are also able to visit them; at a price. The mafia controls everything in the realm and the real world and they use children (either abandoned or sold to the mafia by their parents) to do their dirty work.
Carson has created a dream like realm where humans can meet up with spirits and in the process can create anything their heart desires just by thinking it. Carson’s creativity shines bright throughout her novel as she describes vivid and ethereal scenes of the realm and parallels them with the dark and dirty scenes of the real world. The in between that Carson has created is exactly that, a beautiful mixture of the ethereal from the realm and the dark of the natural world.
This is only book one in Carson’s trilogy and I personally cannot wait to dive into the next two books. So much was left on the table to be explored throughout the rest of the trilogy, and I’m curious to see where Carson takes Fawn as the story progresses over the next two novels. Carson’s writing is captivating while maintaining an easy to read fluidity that makes The Nocere a quick and satisfying read.
*I was gifted a copy of Heather Carson’s novel in exchange for an honest review.*
