This book was an exciting adventure!! I was hooked after the first chapter and couldn't wait to get my preorder copy so that I could find out what was going to happen next! Strongly written, funny, and full of adventure I would highly recommend this one!

This was a very exciting book to experience all over again! I read it when it first came out and had completely forgotten about it. I loved Amani and Jin’s dynamic. I loved the gunslinger aspect and the incorporated fantasy elements!

The dialogue was super witty and the story building was amazing! The only reason why it’s not a 5 stars is because at some parts I felt kind of confused and had to re read paragraphs.

I’m excited to read the sequel and see where Amani and Jin’s and the rebel prince’s story goes!

I had been meaning to pick this up since December 2017, about a year after the book of first came out. The concept of a fantasy book inspired by Arabic myths (or “desert fantasy” - not sure why it is called that) but mixed with gunpowder technology sounded fun.

Unfortunately, this was probably the worst time to pick this book up as I’ve been down with the flu (not COVID thankfully but flu season continues!!). I guess I was hoping that, since this was short and YA, this would be a good book to get through.

Unfortunately, that choice was a bad idea in general. Nothing too egregiously bad about that book; mostly I found it dull. The book is pretty short but I found that not much happened in it which was surprising given that the book deals with an evil kingdom, rebellion, a girl coming into her own etc. The synopsis is a little cliché as was the book in the end.

Perhaps it was the length of the book that didn’t really allow for much exploration of the world. This was more The Mummy instead of a real middle eastern / Arabic fantasy. Well, The Mummy was more fun - this was plodding until about the last 40% which has basically the entire plot (in my opinion). The only reason I am giving this 2 stars in the end is for the last 40%.

At least I can now get rid of the book from my shelves. I will likely not be continuing with the series unless I get it from the library or something. Ah well … better luck next time to me.

PS. How is this a 2016 Goodreads winner - I must read other books in this categories now!!

PPS. The author is Canadian - such a shame!!

I'm on Fire Island for the weekend, y'all! Have you read this yet? I really enjoyed the world building and fantasy elements, and was not even bothered by the simmering romance! Can't wait for the sequel, Traitor to the Throne, due March 2017.

An interesting story of a girl trying escape for a better life mixed with a bit of Djinn legends and mythical creatures. Some hints were dropped that I should have picked up on sooner but made for a good reveal.

This was such a fun and easy book to get through. It sucked me right in and I couldn’t put it down. Looking forward to reading the next book.
