thinking about es muss sein

A combination of dark humor and philosophical genius, this book is brilliant.

My mum gave me this book for my 18th birthday, writing on the title page that it had changed her life when she was my age. I initially put it off reading because it’s not really my usual genre but I eventually decided to try it, and I am so glad I did.

The prose is amazing, rife with beautiful turn of phrase and description. But the true value of the novel lies in its characters. They are brief yet seemingly immortal, touching on key parts of the human existence. They are imperfect, flawed and shameful, yet relatable, fascinating and layered - each one coming across and deeply and unfortunately human.

I have never felt more conflicted over a character as I have with Tomas. His actions seem almost alien: unemotional and cruel, yet somehow strangely human (albeit an extremely flawed human) so much so that I gained a weird sort of respect for his character by the end of the book.

Despite that I found the most value in departure from the main couple. Parts 3 and 6 are genuinely some of the most beautiful and well written passages I’ve read.

Honestly this book is spectacular and I am grateful I could read it and be in a space to appreciate its messages the most.

I read this three summers ago now, but if I remember correctly I really enjoyed it. one of those books where the female characters always feel slightly misogynistic and one dimensional, but the book itself is an incredibly impressive piece of literature. not a read to be taken lightly, it can definitely be a bit of a slog occasionally. but i found it very moving
