I set out to read this book in the summer. I admit that I had to start over reading it about three times before I could really get into it. If I were not reading more interesting books alongside it, I may have continued. A great deal of the book that I DID finish felt very pretentious and I didn't feel particularly connected to the main character. I did like Tereza and I honestly felt pretty bad for her. Unfortunately, the fluffy philosophical tings couldn't make up for the slow plot. I've heard mixed things about Kundera anyway, but at some point I would like to finish at least this book to see for myself. For now, as yet unrated but disappointed.

What is all the hype about, I just do not get it. Everybody is insufferable and the narrator lowkey condescending

A book that would feel deep and philosophical only for people who never think about anything. Morally and thematically inconsistent. Still a very interesting read.
Too much fake philosophy and too much self-insertion
I’m reviewing this two years later and still have strong feelings that this is a steaming pile of self-important merde. It’s incredibly pretentious, and the juxtaposition of sex with war/Occupation is jarring. It wasn’t handled well. No characterization. The characters are just there as place holders and a mouth piece for Kundera’s philosophy. (Which I get is part of the point, but the execution was piss poor. It’s just not good writing. * I shrugged and found better things to do with my time*).
