Book #43 Read in 2013
The Good Luck Girls of Shipwreck Lane by Kelly Harms

A contest is being held where the winner would be given a dream home. The winner's name is Janine Brown. The only problem? There were two Janine Browns who entered the drawing. Janey, was entered into the contest by her Aunt Midge, is a shy woman who loves to cook. Nean is a down-on-her-luck sort of con artist who sees a way out if she wins this home. Both arrive to the dream house. Janey is the true winner and she and her Aunt Midge decide to let Nean stay for a while. After that, their lives take a very different turn from their normal way of life.

This book was a good read. Janey and Nean were interesting characters, though I did want to slap Nean several times throughout the book. Aunt Midge was quite the character; she reminded me of Grandma Mazur from the Stephanie Plum books. This book was a mix of culinary tidbits, romance and a look at life.

I received a copy of this book from BookBrowse in exchange for a review.

I read this because I knew I'd be doing a lot of driving, and I was desperate for an audio book. It was pretty much the very definition of "It was okay." It was pretty clear from the beginning where we were going to end up. One question-- why had foodie Janey never encountered fresh peas before? I hear they're not as hard to come by as black truffles.

Don't judge Kelly Harms by this book, this is her first book and it does show.
It doesn't have the cleverness, well fleshed out characters and grippy writing as her other books.
This is the only one of hers I've read that I wasn't head over heels for.
It's not an awful read, it's an average "nothing really happens" book. But it's not to the standard I've come to expect of the author.
Read one of her others before making your mind up about her

A fantastic fun entertaining read. Love her style of writing and storytelling.

Funny, well written and a really lovely story. And they are constantly cooking so it'll make you hungry too!

This was a nice, easy read. I think I picked it up from the very limited selection of Adult Fiction at the Scholastic Warehouse sale.

I was into this book from the beginning. It was interesting and just quirky enough. I liked all the characters well enough, even though both Jeanine's annoyed me at times. I'd definitely recommend this one. It's a fun, light, summer read.

One of those easy “beach reads” A little predictable, but still a feel good story. The characters are well done, the plot wraps up nicely and you sympathize with all three of the main characters throughout the story. These soft, fuzzy books are a great palate cleanser.

Overall a more enjoyable fluffy read than the other Harms I read recently, THE MATCHMAKERS OF MINNOW BAY. This one follows two women named Janine Brown, one of whom wins a dream home in Maine and one of whom THINKS she won a dream home in Maine and shows up to claim it. Chaos ensues. Nean is a shit at the beginning but Harms actually manages to bring her around, which was pretty impressive given how awful she was at the beginning. (Even if she was in awful circumstances, some of her behavior was still pretty shitty.) There are a ton of great food descriptions here, and it was nice watching Janey come into her own.

However, I'm knocking off a point for Noah, who was awful and a terrible choice of romantic partner, not because of his living situation, but because he wasn't straight with Janey and then was just AWFUL to her when she didn't MAGICALLY KNOW about it and tried to do something nice for him, and THEN chose not to apologize until after HER ENTIRE LIFE IS IN A STATE OF UPHEAVAL. WTF, dude? I wanted to like him so much, but there just wasn't enough storyline to redeem him. At least Nean's shitty behavior was at the beginning of the book, giving her time to make a comeback, rather than at the end, like Noah's, where it's shoehorned in with no hope of redemption.
