Wow. It took me forever, but I finished it. I cannot commend Markus Zusak enough, this book is an absolute masterpiece. I definitely recommend reading, but this is a long, sometimes difficult to get into, lots-of-thinking-required kinda book.

If you loved the Book Thief, I think you'll love this one too. It's not based in the same time, and I don't think that you could find characters more different from each other than between these two books, but Markus Zusak's gorgeous style of writing just applies so well in both stories.

Ten years ago I read 'The Book Thief' and it completely blew me away with its heartbreaking beauty. 'Bridge of Clay' is an excellent book, but Zusak doesn't quite capture the remarkable poetry of the earlier work. What he does do is beautifully weave together a story of a family over many years as they deal with the grief, pain, love (both romantic and familial) and ordinariness of life. It took a few chapters to get into the rhythm of the text, but it was worth it. There are moments that Zusak has perfectly realised in ways that make you want to read them again and again. I do hope we don't have to wait another ten years for another book from him, but if we do, I hope that we get more of that indescribable beauty in the next one.

Zusak writes in way that is beautifully poetic. It’s enjoyable just to sift through the words. The story takes place through several time jumps which isn’t my favorite, but would make a second read a little more interesting. I think I might return to this one in a couple years and it will probably have a higher rating at that time.

Knew I’d give this 5 stars from the moment I started it. Loved this story, the characters and the writing. Missing the Dunbar boys already.

beautifully written. amazing how Zusak is able to describe so much so beautifully in a single sentence. I was frustrated in the first 70-80 pages for being so confused all of the time in the way that the book was written. this method was continued through the book and waiting to know the back story is not my favorite way to read a book nor do I want to have the method used for 500 pages but the story was worth it.
