I went in hoping for a decent murder mystery (set at a boarding school) and got so much more!

The true crime plot was interesting, and I like how the author grappled with the ethics of true crime as entertainment. I wish there were more of that, actually. Some of the plot was very convenient, of course, and the narrator was not particularly well-developed. I think this book was trying to make a lot of commentary on gender politics, and while some of it worked for me, some of it fell flat. And it is definitely too long; there were some parts that really dragged and felt unnecessary. Overall, I still enjoyed this, though.
Idk. I think this felt like one of those books where I care about where the plot goes, but didn’t really care about the process of getting there.
Boring. Did not care about any of the characters.

This book read like a mash-up of Prep, A Secret History, and the Serial podcast. All things I enjoyed, but couldn’t separate from parts of this novel.
In the first few chapters, I felt inundated by names of faculty and staff, the significance of which I was not yet privy to. But as the story continued, I was able to get my bearings, figuring out who the major players were and that the narrator, Bodie, was directing her statements at a specific teacher in the second person POV. From the get-go, I was not sure what to think of Bodie. Is she biased or reliable? What is her personal interest in Thalia's case, and what is her theory on what happened? What is Mr. Bloch's role in the story and what is Bodie's personal connection to him? Her own insecurities and instability are made evident throughout, adding to the perplexing portrayal.
The story meanders in an unpredictable way, alternating between the present-day podcasting class and the crime that took place on Granby's campus many decades prior. The middle third of the book drags on for quite a bit, and it was unclear what direction it was headed. The pacing was much slower than I anticipated for much of the book, but it does pick back up in the final third.
I like the fact that Makkai does not baby her readers and never overexplains scenes that don't yet make sense. The podcast she hosts and her references to real crimes, which are prefaced with, "It was the one where..." adds a fascinating element to the plot.
