Wonderful end to a wonderful series Jimmy was being a man-baby for most of the book when he found out Willow was pragnant. He was really unlikable in his behavior in how be reacted. But Jimmy is a flawed man so I didn't hate but rather enjoy being mad at him & seeing him grow. This book felt a lot more about Willow then Jimmy at times which I enjoyed. I like both characters.
I'm glad things ended on a hopeful note with Jimmy stepping up as we knew he would. I also like the reminder that he does care about Willow it's not just for the baby. He'll move to be with her. I feel it leaves hope that he'll be ready to move on from Fran & the ghosts of Shetland
The mystery it's self was good. First time I figured out the killer. I felt like the abuse & power passed from the victim to another generation of victims so Emma wouldn't feel powerless. She played games with men for power. She tormented the children for power.
I found Daniel a very unlikable character how he handled the emotional affair reveal & aftermath. Then again he was a selfish man. I guess the idea that with Emma dead he was back to his "old self" was a clue that Emma wad toxic and influenced her victims negatively.
The theme of the past defining the characters to their doom is a nice one with Jimmy ending on a note that his past isn't going to withhold his future any longer. Same can be said if Sandy who took steps forward to his own happiness instead of letting low self esstem hold him back.
The immature, selfish parents who don't notice their children's abuse, the professionals who failed Emma, the nasty old woman who was obsessed with the past & those she felt wronged her. The doctor who was abused by his father so he didn't pay attention to his kids. Martha & Charlie being so effected by the abuse it destoried them. Sadly I don't see a better life for two younger siblings unless the death of one child & jailing of another wakes the parents up. The family at the heart of story bullied by the community simply because they bought a house & brought change which became the focus of rage of bitter old woman. But this family got a more hopeful ending with the community. That they might be welcomed into it now. The toxic gossiper is gone. Christopher is freed of his fire obsession and forensics might be a positive place for him to go. It was all masterfully crafted.</spoilers>
