I don't know if this series has been deserving my consistent ratings, but I am really enjoying watching both the Duke and Beatrice grow as people. The last book ended with their engagement and as I said, it felt abrupt to me, like they hadn't fully considered the consequences of that decision. There's a lot more of the societal impact in this one, but we also see the next step in their relationship, how it strengthened beyond the whole ideals of their mystery-solving shenanigans, and honestly it's great.

I don't know if I liked the angle of her parent's mystery, in terms of the mystery element of this one it fell flat compared to the others. It just felt a lot more forced than what had happened previously, and the conclusions didn't have the drama that it deserved.

It's hard to write a review about a book series you're so far in and that you're reading so close to one another, but I think it emphasizes the point that this series is worth reading. There are a lot of great points, and it's not as well-known as it should be.

*UPDATE*
My rating doesn't change and neither does my point of view. This is my least favorite book in the series. I think this series does well when Kesgrave and Bea work together. The fact that she investigated alone left us with just her thoughts and no one to bring out her wit.

*ORIGINAL REVIEW*
This was probably my least favorite.

She spends the majority of the book researching her parents death. The book picks up towards the end when Kesgrave finally joins the investigation.

Although I feel Bea needed to learn the truth about her parents, I wish it would have happened sooner or maybe not taken precedence. Also, she refuses to tell Kesgrave about her investigation and sordid details she discovers, because she's afraid that Kesgrave will dump her; needless to say that the investigation was not as interesting.

The best parts of this series happen when Kesgrave and Bea are working together and this installment didn't have too much of that. The moment she told Kesgrave the truth and he joined her investigation and they began interacting; that was the moment the book got good and the moment where I sped through reading cause I couldn't put it down.

*** Slightly better than just a good read, 3.5 stars ***

The Beatrice Hyde-Clare Mysteries book are all fun, and this one has some twists I definitely appreciated even in a book where I wasn't looking for anything complicated.
But for real, I need Lynn Messina to stop explaining and re-explaining everything. It's only been 30 pages, Lynn...I get it.
Pretty charming characters though. ;)
