Very much a strong 3.75 - close to 4 stars. Easy to read and a story that hung together well. Was good (and would be a good beach read) :)
Another piece of the puzzle has snapped into place. Garth doesn’t seem to want to hurt the sisters just Jed and if he has to use the sisters he will... But I think there is more to the story.
The Nick/Garth connection was interesting and how he wanted to help Izzy makes me think he isn’t all bad.
The concertation with Garth and Jed blew me away as well as the one with Jed and Izzy she surprised me in the best way how she stood up for herself.
He is going to push all his kids away and where will that leave him with his big house and his big pile of money how lonely that would be. Why Garth can’t just let it frustrates me.
Izzy and Nick together made sense and I liked their story.
The narration was great.

When Izzy refuses to leave her room for a month after an explosion leaves her with 30% of her sight they have her taken against her will to a survivor training camp.
Maybe more of a 3.5, but I enjoyed Izzy's plan to deal with Garth.

Izzy is a spitfire, and this one didn't disappoint. Nick was a great guy. I totally understood that he couldn't just automatically believe what the Titan sisters said about Garth (though admittedly, as far as he knew, they wouldn't know about the connection). But I loved how he stood up to Garth once he found out the truth AND realized Garth had used him as well.
And wow, Garth does have a conscience! At first, I was really wondering because it appeared he'd lost his soul somewhere along the way, but when he realized what his vendetta had done to his longest friendship, he started to take a step back, I think. I still don't get why he had to make the daughters pay for their father's asshattery. But I love Izzy for throwing him for a loop with the whole "we have to fix Garth" thing. And OMG, Jed gets the crown for asshats for eternity. We finally discover why he hates Jed so much -- what Jed did that was so unforgiveable. And yeah, it was a doozie.
I thought Izzy's growth during this book was extraordinary. She finally started to look outside herself and finally decided maybe she should grow up. I thought she took some very grown up actions that were tough for her but necessary.
OMG I hate Jed. He's one of those people who shouldn't be allowed to have kids. He may never have raised a hand to them physically, but all they were was pawns in his life and he felt he could bend their will to whatever he needed from them. His actions in this book prove they were never anything to him but expendable. I can't wait for the last one, where I think Jed will finally get his comeuppance.

Spoiler
And then, he tells Izzy she's worth nothing if she can't see, and she can't come back to Glory's Gate. Then, when she gets her sight back, when he really has absolutely NO hold over her (she's not living with him and getting nothing from him), he tries to whore her out to a business associate. And THEN we find out he may be behind the explosion!I thought Izzy's growth during this book was extraordinary. I finished this book in less than a day, what can I say, I really like Susan Mallery and the Lone Star Sisters! Looks like the next book (out in Nov) is going to be about Dana, maybe she gets together with Garth? Thats my bet. I love the characters in this series.
I liked this book a bit more because we got to see things from Garth and Izzy's POV. I feel like there could've been more to her character and maybe I was expecting more than I should've. It's just with her, the only focus is how she's like half blind. I understand it was difficult but it got tiring after a while. Overall, it was a great book and I'm probably not making any sense so ignore me. I enjoyed it. It was fun and I liked some parts more than others.
Having said I read this is a bit of a stretch, but to mark it on my list as couldn't get into isn't right either. I did quickly skip through to find out what happened but I never did really get into it. The Patriarch of the family is just nasty. couldn't identify with any of the characters.

I saw Straight From the Hip on a list of best reads or something and realized I never branched out from the authors Fool's Gold series. It sounded interesting, and book 3 in the series, but I figured it would be fine to read out of order. It was, but now I will have to go back and read the rest since I enjoyed this one so much. There is a bit of a continuous storyline, but I didn't feel like I was missing anything reading this book before the first two.
Izzy has always been fearless. Always finding the next big rush, the next dangerous, but fun, adventure. She has never shied away from a challenge until now. She was in an explosion on an oil rig and has lost most of her eyesight. She can see general shapes in bright spaces, but not much else. She could have a surgery that would fix it, would let her regain her sight, but there is a small chance that it would leave her completely blind. She won't do it, she won't chance it. She is terrified of living the rest of her life completely in the dark. She just sits in her room not doing much of anything until her sisters take over.
Nick has a lot of regrets. He has things in his past that he cannot get over. He is a good guy, he tries to help people now, but he just cannot forgive himself. He keeps to himself and doesn't want to let anyone get to close. He runs a business retreat which is really just the income so he can try and help kids who have been through trauma. He is asked by his buddy Garth to help Izzy find herself again and he can't really say no.
When Izzy first meets Nick she is not happy at all. He is dragging her out of her room and to his ranch. She is so stubborn and self pitying. She is determined that her life is over now that she can only see a little bit and determined not to have the surgery that would fix it. She pretty much hates Nick since he is forcing her to do something, to try and get on with her life, to try and not be so afraid. Ah it was fun to watch. I loved how he pushed her and egged her on just so that she would do something and not wallow. He was really a great guy.
Of course they both start falling for the other, but with Izzy not being able to see anything, not being able to read Nick, it throws her off a little bit. It doesn't help that Nick is determined to not get involved, even though he has a hard time sticking to that. I loved reading their story as they were just perfect together. Yes there are some issues since Nick's buddy Garth seems to be set on taking down Izzy and her family, but it was a great read. I can't wait to read the rest of them and see what happened before now, see Izzy's sisters find their happily ever after, then see how everything works out in the end. I am glad I started this new to me series as if the other books are as good as this one it is going to be a lot of fun.

At some point I am going to start one of Mallery's series with the first book. I found this one at our beach rental. It was the perfect book for reading on vacation - Mallery knows how to write fun good contemporary romances. I may look for the first two books when I have time.
